Dot Cake Brownies are the ultimate chocolate upgrade to the viral internet trend. Learn how to make this crunchy, frosted rainbow dessert completely from scratch!

Dot Cake Brownies – The Baking Trend You Can’t Miss
If your social media feeds look anything like mine, you have probably seen the bright, crunchy, rainbow-speckled treats taking over the internet. The Dot Cake has officially gone viral, and it is easily one of the simplest baking trends make at home. I decided to take this viral concept and give it the ultimate chocolate-lover’s upgrade.
Introducing: From-Scratch Dot Cake Brownies!
A rich, ultra-fudgy brownie base made entirely from scratch, topped with a thick, layer of homemade vanilla buttercream, and completely blanketed in a satisfyingly crunchy layer of rainbow nonpareil sprinkles. This easy homemade dot cake brownie version such a fun and easy dessert.

Why You Need to Try This Brownie Version
While the original Dot Cake viral trend is to use a base of vanilla or yellow sponge cake, my version uses fudgy, ultra-decadent homemade brownies as the foundation.

If you’re wondering why you should skip the cake and make this brownie variation instead, here is exactly why this recipe is a total game-changer:
1. There’s a Secret Ingredient
Unlike standard recipes that rely on cocoa powder, the secret to this scratch-made base is folding melted chocolate chips directly into the batter to create a rich and chewy brownie that perfectly holds up under a thick layer of frosting.

Want to get extra chocolaty? Replace the vanilla frosting with Chocolate Buttercream Frosting.
2. The From-Scratch Flavor
While many tutorials rely on boxed mixes and store-bought frosting, this from-scratch version combines fudgy brownies with homemade butter vanilla frosting, turning a viral internet trend into a bakery quality at home version.
3. A Bite Full of Textures
The magic of a Dot Cake is all in the texture, and this brownie version takes that contrast to an eleven. You get three distinct experiences in every single spoonful:
- The Crunch: A tight, dense armor of rainbow nonpareils that crackles delightfully with every bite.
- The Cream: A smooth, thick layer of pillowy vanilla frosting that melts in your mouth.
- The Fudge: A heavy, rich, deeply chocolatey brownie base that grounds the whole dessert.
Whether you decide to press your scratch-made brownies into individual clear dessert cups for that authentic NYC “Dot Cup” look, or you bake them in a traditional pan and frost them level with the rim, you are going to love this twist. This recipe is an easy and cute party dessert, plus tastes infinitely better than a standard box mix.

The Backstory: Where Did the Dot Cake Trend Start?
Originating from New York’s The Dot Cakes and popularized at Butterfield Market, this viral social media dessert is a single-serve cup of perfectly flat cake and frosting flipped upside down and dipped into nonpareil sprinkles for a nostalgic, vibrant, and crunchy-to-creamy treat.
Then TikTok and Instagram turned the “Dot Cup” design into an overnight viral sensation as creators replicate its signature, ultra-flat layer of frosting and vibrant, crunchy coat of nonpareil sprinkles.
