How Do You Make Homemade Chocolate Buttercream Frosting?
This easy homemade chocolate frosting recipe is my go-to when I want something sweet and decadent. Give this recipe a try the next time you make cupcakes, cakes, cookies or brownies – your family will love each and every bite!
To make this chocolate buttercream, you will need the following ingredients:
- unsalted butter
- powdered sugar
- cocoa powder
- heavy cream
- vanilla extract
You will also need the following supplies:
- measuring cups and spoons of various sizes
- mixing bowl
- electric mixer
- spatula
You can also use it as a filling in cakes or with my surprise inside cupcakes.
Start by creaming the unsalted butter until you reach desired consistency. Add powdered sugar, cocoa powder, vanilla extract and cream until smooth using an electric mixer on medium speed. Add small amounts of the cream a little at a time and mix until fluffy.

Chocolate Buttercream Frosting
Ingredients
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened (113 grams)
- 2 cups confectioners’ sugar (240 grams)
- ⅓ cup unsweetened cocoa powder (35 grams)
- 6 tablespoons heavy cream* (see note below)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- In a large bowl, whip butter until light and fluffy (about 3 to 4 minutes).½ cup unsalted butter, softened
- Add in confectioners’ sugar, cocoa powder, heavy cream and vanilla. Beat frosting until well mixed and fluffy (about 5 minutes).2 cups confectioners’ sugar, 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, 6 tablespoons heavy cream*, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Add frosting to cake, cupcakes or brownies.
- Make ahead and store in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
