How Do You Make a Bow Out of Ribbon?
Making a bow out of ribbon is easier than you think with this quick technique! This type of DIY bow is perfect for a wreath. You can’t go wrong with a simple layered messy ribbon style. The hardest part of this tutorial is deciding which ribbon colors to choose!
What You Need to Make a Bow
First you’ll want to cut several different types of ribbon the same length. If you want a 5” bow, double the length that you cut to 10”.
STEP 1 – Layer your ribbon on top of each other and angle in different directions.
STEP 2 – Pinch the middle of the ribbon with your finger.
STEP 3 – Tie with a twist tie or pipe cleaner. I connected two twist ties that I snagged from my grocery store!
STEP 4 – Tie another small piece of ribbon around the twist tie to hide it.
STEP 5 – Cut the ribbon edges into your favorite style. Add another twist tie through the ribbon in the back so you can attach to whatever you want to decorate.
Adding to a simple grapevine wreath is our go-to quick way to decorate a door. Change out your ribbon colors for each season!

Gorgeous bow! That’s a good idea! This is very easy. Can’t wait to try. Thank you Amy!
Great idea! Thanks!
I find its easier to cut the dove tails BEFORE putting the bow together! You can cut a couple at a time that way and also less chance of cutting your finger or clipping the edge of one of the other ribbons.
So pretty and so easy! My kind of craft!
Beautiful bow!! This is such a great idea! It looks so do-able too! Can’t wait to try it. Thanks so much Amy!
I can’t wait to try this. Most of the bow ideas I see require more skill and mine never end up looking the way they are supposed to. Thanks for sharing this great idea!
This is a very easy bow to make and it looks great. Be sure to use different ribbons for Easter basket bows, birthday bows, and many of the bows crafters make throughout the year..
