The Help Movie Poster

The Help opens this week in movie theaters.  Last year, I won an amazing trip to visit the movie set in Mississippi. I took my friend Naomi who told me about the book. We had a blast! Not only did we get a chance to talk with several of the main actresses and director, Tate Taylor, we even got to share a slice of Minny’s famous chocolate pie!

A few nights ago, I saw the movie and wanted to let you know my thoughts and how it compares to the book along with some fun stories from my trip and a giveaway!

When you love a book, you know the movie is not going to the same. There is no way to fit every scene from a book into less than two hours. As a fan of the book, I have to say… this movie was well done! It’s hard to imagine, not too long ago, this was reality for black women in the south. I think Tate Taylor did a great job of telling the women’s stories while also keeping true to the book. From the costumes and set designs, to the wonderful acting and doses of hilarious humor thrown in, you can’t help but be moved.

While on the movie set, we were lucky enough to watch this scene with Skeeter (Emma Stone), Aibileen (Viola Davis) and Minny (Octavia Spencer). It’s the scene where Minny reveals the “terrible awful” about what she did to the mean-spirited, social-climbing Hilly Holbrook.

The Help Movie

We weren’t actually on the set with this view, we were sitting with the directors watching it on a monitor and listening to the sound through head phones. For such a dramatic scene, we were amazed by the actress’s talents. They would be cracking up about something silly in between scenes and then as soon as they called ACTION, it was serious business.

Let me just say… this scene is one of the BEST parts of the movie. Sissy Spacek who plays Missus Walters is a scene stealer. There was so much laughter in the theater that I need to see the movie again just to know what was actually said!

What’s amazing, is most of the movie was shot in a giant warehouse. We weren’t allowed to take photos of the set, but if you can imagine walking into a huge building and going back to the 1960’s, that’s what it was like. They had the interiors of everyone’s homes built here, along with a giant backdrop of the New York City skyline for the outside of Mrs. Stine’s office.

The Help Movie

When you’re on a movie set like this, time stops. There are no windows and you’re back in time. It was the oddest feeling. I couldn’t imagine working there for 6 months to a year! I talked with Viola Davis, who plays Aibileen, at lunch and she said yes, it’s really hard to be gone from home for so long. She will go home and forget how to work her TV remote control. Viola was so nice and down to earth. It was a pleasure talking to her, but so crazy because she was dressed as Aibileen! She was perfect for the role, she made Aibileen even better. It was like I was in the book having lunch with Aibileen. So strange!

They were close to wrapping up the movie, so all of the props were in another warehouse for sale! I walked into this room and about had a heart attack when someone told me I could shop! Look at all of the amazing furniture… and this was just a portion of the props. A vintage junk shopper’s heaven!

The Help Movie Props

Unfortunately, everything good that I wanted to buy already had the director’s name on it. Tate Taylor had just bought a plantation while he was in Mississippi and needed to furnish it. Too bad for me, he has great taste:-)

The Help Movie Props

Besides the hilarious Minny, Celia Foote was my favorite character of the book. Each rack in the warehouse was sorted by rooms and characters. I was excited to find this old jewelry box on Celia’s rack. So that was what I went home with. I looked for it in the movie, but didn’t see it. If you do, let me know!

Celia in The Help Movie

When I read about the actress playing Celia (Jessica Chastain), I couldn’t picture her in this role. Well, she was absolutely amazing. Besides such a wonderful story, the actors are truly incredible.

One actress that I think you’ll see a lot of in the future is Octavia Spencer (Minny). We met her at dinner one evening with producer, Brunson Green. She just plopped down beside us and had a conversation. Absolutely the sweetest woman. She is hilarious too and who writer Kathryn Stockett based the character of Minny on in the first place.

We had such a fun time in Greenwood, Mississippi. I’ve shared more behind the scenes of the movie here as well. Go see it and tell me what you think!

We of course came prepared with books for the actresses to sign. Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer were kind enough to talk with us and sign our books. I brought an extra one, just to give away to a special reader!! I’ve been saving this for nearly a year and excited to give it away!!!

Giveaway is closed – Winner Update

Congratulations to Michele!!

I loved reading the comments and learning how much this book touched so many of you! Michele and her sister loved it so much, they did “The Help Road Trip “to Mississippi.

I’m so excited Michele won the autographed book. You’ll see why when you read the comment she left here:

Oh my goodness – what a movie!  I’m sitting in our hotel in Jackson, and my sister and I are so glad we did this trip!  Ironically, we played Johnny Cash’s “Going to Jackson” in the car to start a trip, having no idea that this was the song that would open the movie!
Once in Jackson, we started with Brent’s Drugs for dinner, and took tons of pictures everywhere we went.  It was so much fun to see the diner we had eaten in yesterday afternoon on the screen last night!

Next we did the Help Driving tour – again, pictures of everything. It was cool to be familiar with the street names and places like the Jitney Jungle (now called McDade’s) when we were watching the movie. Our final destination was Medgar Evers’ house, which ended our tour on a somber note.  While the house is maintained by organizations, it sits in a horribly run down area of Jackson and has very little fanfare.  No signs on the roads that I could see announcing Medgar Evers’ home, merely a large bronze plaque on the house and a historical sign at the curbside.  Sobering to look around and realize that his neighborhood was so run down and didn’t look like a place that anyone would choose to move into.  Economic disparities were so obvious in Jackson, and it made me wonder just how far we have really come.

On to the movie- ours was sold out, so every seat was taken.  I LOVED the movie!  When I saw the cast months ago, I couldn’t envision any of them as the characters I had construed in my head. Now I can’t remember the characters I had imagined because the actors so embodied the personalities in the book. We laughed and cried, and we must see this one again!
On to Ole Miss today, then our Help vacation is done.  My sister returns to Maryland in a few days, and my 3 month stay at St Jude ends in 2 weeks.  I will remember this little 2 day adventure as one of the most awesome vacations ever. Amazing how 1 book could inspire so many of us.  Hopefully, it will actually bring some much needed change in the way we all see each other.

Thanks for sharing your trip pictures and for the chance to win this book.  Also, thanks for the opportunity to chronicle my little adventure in my 3 entries – I don’t have a blog/website, but now I have a mini journal of my escapade!

Michele

  1. I “liked” your facebook page and I love your blog! I live in Greenwood, Mississippi, so of course I loved the book and the movie! It was really exciting last year when the filming was going on. Would love to win your contest!

  2. I got the Help a year ago.. I loved all of it.. but especially the relationship that the southern maid had with the daughter of one of the women.. I of course loved the Pie… part too… I want to see the movie… but have not yet… I have liked you on facebook months ago.. I loved seeing the props room… you showed.. I have never been on a movie set… it would be fun.

  3. I haven’t had a chance to read the book but it’s next on my list. I have heard wonderful things about the book and the movie…can’t wait to experience both!!!! I’m excited about a chance to win the signed copy of The Help. A group of women (friends and neighbors) are bringing readers and book clubs together to see the movie, have some fun and “Help” women. This book would be a wonderful auction item for the Books Inspiring Help Benefit where all the proceeds go to the Sojourner Family Peace Center, a women’s shelter in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. (http://bookinspiringhelp.webstarts.com/) Thanks!!! Now off to Facebook:)

  4. I read this book in days as I was unable to put it down. Thank you foe the posted pictures from behind the scenes.

  5. What a great giveaway!!

I would love to read this book!! Haven’t gone to non-kid movie in years but can’t wait to see The Help!!

Thank you for a chance for this giveaway. I love your blog and been a follower your on facebook for quite some time.

  6. Read the book with my book club buddies. I grew up in the North in the mid 80’s my husbands company transferred us to LA (lower Alabama) where we spent 7 years. We lived in a small town of 6,000 people – 53 miles from the closets city where one could find malls, pizza, and movies…..for sure there was some culture shock. Reading this book brought to mind many of the older southern women I got to meet and know while living there. It was a great book and how lucky you were to be able to visit the set. Planning on seeing the movie this week. Appreciate your review of it.

  7. Loved the book and just saw the movie lst night w/my ‘sister friends’. The book pulls you in from the very first page!! I love nostalgia, which is what this movie portrays (the good and the bad) Glad we’ve come so far with our equality, but I do miss the simpler times. The movie was VERY WELL DONE! Succinctly covered both aspects of the times. Loved Minnie!! One movie that will make you ‘feel’…Will probably see it again with my husband…Thanx for the laughs and the tears.

  8. I loved this book soo, so much! The characters and the story just seemed so real, and I was just in awe that this was Stockett’s first novel! Probably the part that sticks in my memory the most is how Abilene would tell Maebelle (sp?) “You are good, you are smart, you are kind.” All children should be told that. But I felt sad that it wasn’t her mother doing the telling.

That, and the pie. I suppose everyone will never forget the pie.

  9. I haven”t had the opportunity to read the book or see the movie but the previews make me want to scoot out & do so as soon as possible. I would love to be able to compare the book to the movie because the movie looks SO good!

  10. How wonderful! Sooooo I loved how all of the characters, good and bad, had flaws. Even in fiction, no one is perfect and good all the time. Can’t wait to see the movie tomorrow!

  11. I love the book, but have not seen the movie yet. I really want to watch it with my sister, who is in Chicago, but I can not get there & she can not get to my area. Anyway, the book is the best one I have read in a long time. I love how Kathy Stockett wrote it using Skeeter, Aibileen, & Minny’s point of views.

  12. The Help was a very moving book to me. It opened doors for many conversations with my mother and friends about their experiences growing up in the south. I loved the film and cried like a baby. It is very moving on many levels. Excellent acting by all.

I follow your page on FB!

  13. Being from Mississippi, my favorite thing about the book was the reminder that the women that took care of the little white children, often loved them and raised them as their own children. They could overlook the societal injustices and the racial barriers all around them (often supported by the very people that they were working for- the parents of the children), and found a way to love “their” babies so much that those children in return and as a direct result had love planted in their hearts. . . s l o w l y creating small forward steps to equal rights. I loved the book, and I feel that anyone that thinks the title of the book is in some way disrespectful, must have missed the entire point of the story.

  14. First of all, I didn’t understand the URL thing, but oh well.. I liked you long ago on FB & I get e-mails every day. Dearly love every one. Have recommended to several friends & they are obsessed, too!! I haven’t seen the movie or read the book. I am very anxious to do both. It’s all I can do to wait!! I’m not positive that my sister is gonna surprise me with one or the other. But I would love to enter this giveaway & beat her to the punch! Just being sisters.. Even if I don’t win, I’m happy for the person who does! Good luck to everyone!! Loving Locurto!!!

  15. I don’t own the book/haven’t seen the movie, but I read the first page and REALLY liked it. Hope that counts!

I’ve been following you on facebook for a while now (Mariah Lily Meade).

  16. I have not read the book nor seen the movie but I definitely would like to do both! Here’s hoping I win the autographed book! I am going with my daughter to Ft. Smith tomorrow so I am going to try to pick up a copy of the book there at Books A million since she has some books waiting for her on order. Here’s hoping I can find a copy!!!

  17. Saw the movie yesterday and loved it. My girls said that they thought it was sad. BUt, I had to explain to them that it was about women empowering themselves, and changing their lives for the better.

  18. I bought the audiobook from Audible, and have spent all weekend listening to it. I love it! What a wonderful story. It’s been a long time since a story has make me feel so many different emotions. Good job!

  19. Hi! I don’t have the book. I would love to get the book because I love to read.
I have not seen the movie but want to. I follow you on Facebook.

  20. I loved both the book and the movie! I especially loved the courage some of the characters displayed even thought it was a great risk in their community.

  21. I loved the depth of the characters. My friend turned me onto the book when it first came out. She had grown up with “help” always ironing in the basement. We have talked a lot about what that was like and how she feels about it now.

I already follow on Facebook, and have retweeted and now follow on Twitter as Readag94

  22. I read this book a month or so ago. Can’t wait to see the movie. I liked the whole book. My favorite part(s) was the way Aibileen talked with Mae Mobley. It was very sweet.

PS I “liked” your facebook page a long time ago.

  23. My boss at work read the book and passed it on to me. One day I was talking to a co-worker (she is in her early 60’s) and she had also read the book. She not only loved the book, she lived it. She grew up with a African American maid in the South. She said that reading this book opened her eyes to so many things, some that she felt bad about now. But as some have already commented… it’s important to learn about our past so “we” don’t repeat our mistakes.

This was by far one of the best books I have EVER read and I can’t wait to see the movie! 🙂

    P.S. I liked you on FB. 🙂

  24. I purchased the book on Kindle a couple of months ago, before I knew anything about the movie. Told all my friends what a fabulous, and fun book it was. Shortly after reading it, I found a PBS special one day while channel surfing, about the bus ride the blacks took during the same time period as the march and life during that time period, for blacks. When I heard there was a soon to be movie about “The Help”, I could hardly stand the wait…like a little kid at Christmas!!! I was not dissapointed! It is so close to the book in story that made me feel like I had crawled into the books pages. Well worth reading, watching or BOTH. I am a Facebook friend and of course I Liked you 😉

  25. The book was so amazing. It took me to a place I never imagined. Growing up, we were told about how Civil Rights came about and Martin Luther King, Jr. and things that happened, but this was completely different. This was a personal account of what actually happened in the South to WOMEN! I’ve never even thought about that perspective before. I cried, laughed, and stared mouth-open in amazement at the things that were in the book and loved every second of it. Loved it and at the same time was horrified at the way people were treated not too terribly long ago. Mae Mobley literally broke my heart. But I’ve never laughed so hard as at Minny’s sweet revenge with the Terrible Awful.

I’ve been telling everyone to read it and I plan on doing so again. And again. And again. I would love to have a signed copy of this book. I think that it holds a valuable place for us as a look into history.

  26. I am a follower on both Facebook and Twitter, I unfortunately haven’t seen the movie, (I have to wait till it comes on DVD because I am unable to sit in theatres) I would cherish the book, with the autographs and enjoy reading it. Thanks for sharing your adventure.

  27. I haven’t read the book nor have I seen the movie. But very soon I will. It will be sooner if I won. I really want to read it!

  28. Loved the book and am so glad that I “Like” your FB page for a while now. Tweet? 🙁 Not a tweeter. But LIKE you anyway.

  29. I loved the book, had a real hard time putting it down. Celia was my favorite character. I am already a fan on Facebook.

  30. The best part of the book & movie is the importance of equality. I could see this movie over & over. What a great mix of laughing & crying. I already follow you on FB & Twitter. Thanks so much for sharing your journey from the movie set! It’s fun to get a glimpse on what happens behind the scenes.

  31. I already like your facebook page, that is how I found out about the giveaway 🙂

  32. I LOVED the book and can’t wait to see the movie! I loved reading this post too, getting to shop from the set props, OMG! I would LOVE that! My favorite character was Celia. I mean how could you not love her. Some of those other characters though 0.0! But that is what made the book great! I love the ads for the movie, can’t wait to see it!

  33. I listened to the book on CD from the library and I loved every minute of it. I am nervous about seeing the movie in case it doesn’t do it justice. I loved Abilene and Skeeter and Minnie the best. Thanks for the chance to win!

  34. I haven’t read the book or seen the movie yet. But I would love to win this book so I could read it before seeing it!

  35. I read this book a while ago. It was recommended to me by a small independent book store owner in a town I was visiting. I loved it!! There are too. Many good parts to pick just one.
With all the books I have read ( I love to read ) there are only two that I have kept because I knew I would read them more than once. The Help is one of those two books. (The other is I knowThis Much Is True by Wally Lamb-totally different read but I thought an excellent book)
Thanks for the behind the scenes look at the movie. I can’t wait to go see it.

  36. I loved the booked and was worried that the movie wouldn’t meet my expectations, but I was pleasantly surprised and thought it was so well done.

  37. Love the book and the movie. I have trouble picking a favorite part, but all of the toilets on Hilly’s lawn definitely ranks near the top.

  38. I Love the help. I was going through a rough break up, and my English teacher told me to read it. I found so much strength through Aibileen and her ability to get up and go to work after her sons death. She was so inspirational and she gave me hope. I now recommend this book to everyone that has an interest. So far my mom, director, aunt, grandma, and my sister has read it and loved it

  39. I just got back from watching this movie and read the book a few months back. I was scared the movie would not do the nook justice but boy was I wrong! The movie was just as amazing as the book! It is so hard to choose my favorite part… One was definently the relationship between Minnie and Celia. It was just so touching and to read, but then to see it on film portrayed by such talented actresses made it even more memorable.

  40. I haven’t seen the movie or read the book, but it is the next read for my online book club. I can’t wait to crack open the book binding and start my reading adventure!

  41. I just saw the movie, today. It is so hard to believe that people could be treated that way. It was a very good movie. I also want to read the book. What a neat experience for you and your friend. Thank you for your giveaway. So nice of you to think of otheres.

  42. I haven’t read the book yet – its on my list to download to my kindle and I really want to go see the movie.

  43. I just retired and moved from MO to TN to be near my daughter, and read the book before moving here. My daughter then read it and loved it as much as I did, so when the movie started here on Wed., we had to go. I graduated from HS in 1960,so I grew up in the era of the book, so I could relate. We loved the movie, too, but it could have been 4 hours long and we still would not have wanted it to end. When it was over, everyone in the theatre clapped, then just sat there, not wanting to leave. We all wanted more, even though it lasted 137 minutes. There were things that had to be left out in the movie, but thank goodness we had read the book and knew what was going on. We both thought we might want to read the book again, and for sure see the movie again also. The hair and clothes were so right on, and the southern accents were terrific (I am getting used to that here in TN). It was a wonderful experience to be shared by a mother & daughter who now live in the same state for the first time in almost 40 years.

  44. I am so excited to read this book. I want to see the movie first though. I don’t like seeing the movie after I have read the book because I tend to get disappointed.

  45. i have just loved reading about your win and your trip – surely the experience of a life-time! i only heard about the book and movie from lolli (better in bulk) so i immediately went out and bought the book which i’m half way through! it’s such a great read, easy to read – you really get such a great sense of the time and what makes each character tick. the whole mother-daughter dynamic is very well written. the movie opens here sept 15 – i hope i have finished the book by then and i hope your giveaway is open to those of us at the bottom of the world!

  46. A friend let me borrow her copy to read but I’d love a copy of my own. We plan on going to watch the movie together. I was born in Greenville MS so I know exactly what Greenwood is like! I follow you on facebook, love getting your emails in my inbox and am addicted to your printables!

  47. I can hardly wait to see the movie! Read my daughter’s copy of the book (could hardly put it down) and would love to have an authographed copy of my very own!

  48. I would love to receive a copy of the book (signed)!! I haven’t read it or seen the movie yet, but I plan to do both very soon. 🙂

  49. I haven’t read the book yet! And I haven’t seen the movie!! But I want to SO SO SO badly! I just went to the library to check it out yesterday, but it was checked out. When I tried to put it on hold I was #26! Looks like it’s amazing! I can’t wait to read it!

  50. I haven’t read the book but saw the movie, I loved the check “two slice Hilly” and the song at the end by Mary J. Blige – living proof.

  51. My husbands family is from the South. When I saw the preview to the move I was super excited to go see it with my mother-in-law who is a fabulous Southern cook. I have not read the book or seen the movie but the preview was fabulous! I love the scene about the toilet in the preview! It’s just so funny and rings so true to the South!

  52. I would LOVE to win the book! OK, seriously, I haven’t read ANYTHING but the Bible in 3 years. I went from devouring 2 books a week to NOTHING but the Bible. I WANT TO READ THIS BOOK. 😀

  53. I follow you on face3book and thank you for sharing all these pics with us! i am looking forward to catching the movie with my friend this weekend!!

  54. Oh I so loooved this book!! by far one of my faves and read it last summer and could not wait to for the movie to come out!!!! i loved the characters in the book, but i loved how all the maids came together and rallied for a better life, knowing that they could loose their lives in the process but Skeeter was right along with them!!

  55. I listen to a lot of books while I am working, some are good, some so-so and some are great! This one was great! I loved the characters and learning so much about life in that time period. I shared the bcd with my sister and she loved it too!

  56. This was one of the best books I’ve read in a very long time. Such a sad time in our history here in the USA. Not growing up in the south, it was incredible to me, how awful people could be. Stockett’s book just flowed. I could hardly put it down! Going to the movie on Tues with the friend who loaned me the book, way back when it first came out!

  57. I haven’t read the book OR seen the movie yet, but can’t wait to do both!! I love anything set in the South and the 60’s period sounds fun! I “liked” your FB page for an extra entry! Would love to win this book!

  59. In the middle of the book. Can’t wait to finish it so I can go see the movie! I think I’ve watched the trailer 4 times just today!

  60. What I loved about the book is Skeeter’s passion for telling the story of the “help” and the courage of Abilene and Minny and the other women to share their experiences.
    I “liked” LL long ago!

  61. I haven’t read the book yet, but just saw the movie tonite with a girlfriend & loved it…can’t wait ’til it’s out to buy! I also “like” your FB page & enjoy following Living Locurto:)

  62. I am going to see the movie Sunday. Cant wait to read the book as well. Jealous that you got to see the set! Thanks as always for all the lovely things you share with us!

  63. After the first chapter, I was already casting the movie in my head! I’ve read it twice and have told everyone to read the book:) I wish it was a series.

  64. I haven’t seen the movie OR read the book, but I really want to do both! Maybe if someone sent me the book……… 🙂

  65. Being from Mississippi, I enjoyed the landmarks mentioned in the book, Fairview Inn, etc. I think what was so funny, is that I could put a name with several of the characters, of people I know now, not then. I never really thought anything about my grandmother’s maid sitting in a different place than us for lunch–just thought maybe she didn’t have time to sit and enjoy lunch with us. I enjoyed the friendships that developed in the book that crossed racial lines. Really wanted to smack around Hilly. Wished the romance would have worked out for skeeter. Ditto on one of the few books I have read in the last few years that I couldn’t put down, and couldn’t wait to read the next chapter. They filmed a few scenes in the town that I live in, Clarksdale,MS. Would love a signed copy of the book. 🙂

  66. I haven’t seen the movie or read the book. I have seen the preview trailers and loved what I have seen. I can’t wait to do both. thanks for the chance!

PS What a wonderful experience it sounds like you had & great opportunity! Thanks for sharing!

  67. I just signed up on your Facebook page. Thanks again for the opportunity to win such a great gift.

  68. Entering again for this awesome prize!
It dawned on me that I didn’t say what my favorite part of the book was. There were so many points that had me laughing and at times wanting to cry, but the most poignant memory I have is of Aibilene telling Mae Mobley, ” You is kind, you is smart, you is important.” What a wonderful gift to give a child. I hope to always have the presence of mind to speak such simple, empowering words to my own children.

Heading to Jackson in 24 hours, pick up my sister in 7 hours, getting ready for my long-awaited summer vacation to see The Help.

    Thanks!
    Michele

  69. Have not read the book OR seen the movie yet, BUT have heard that they both are amazing! Would love so I can read it! 🙂

  70. I haven’t read the book OR seen the movie yet. I can’t wait! I want to get the book read before I see the movie!

  71. I’m about 3/4 through the book and am loving every bit of it! I’m so looking forward to seeing the movie and really wanted to read the book first. My heart is already captured by the characters. This autographed book would be a thrill to win!

  72. I saw the movie last night and loved it! My fav part was the furniture, outfits, the jars of food, etc. I laughed, I cried, I laughed, I cried!!

  73. I haven’t read the book nor have I seen the movie yet, but i love this era! I will be checking it out soon! 🙂 Thanks!

  74. I read the book a few months ago before I ever heard it was going to be a movie…and I loved it!! Can’t wait to see the movie but I have 2 young kids so I don’t get to the theater much…may have to wait for the DVD.

  75. The reason why I loved this book so much (besides the fact that it is just good), is that it is the first book that I have read in years that I could just not put down! When I was a teenager and in my twenties, I would stay half way through the night reading (and then I could sleep in….pre-children). That is what happened with The Help…..not only did I stay up waaaaayyyy late reading it, I picked it back up as soon as I opened my eyes! I can NOT wait to the movie and would love the signed copy!!!!!

    Beth

  76. Amy, I haven’t done either, but can not wait to see the movie next week. thanks for your thoughts. It only makes me want to see it more.

  77. I haven’t read the book yet but plan to most definitely. I want to read it before I see the movie but I definitely will not miss this movie. Even my 14-year-old girls want to go after seeing the trailer. I would love to win this as I can’t afford to buy it right now!

  78. This book was fabulous! I enjoyed every page. The characters were interesting and really came to life in the book. I felt every emotion as I read the book. I laughed and cried. I would LOVE to have my own copy, and signed…that would be awesome!

  79. Liked you on FB! Subscribe to you by email! Following you on Twitter…I just love Living Locurto! Can’t wait to read The Help!

  80. I really liked the book but seeing the movie today made the characters really come alive. Very well done. Funny thing: walking out of the theater I grabbed a black lady’s hand and said, “I just have to hug someone”. ?

  81. The Help was one best book I’ve read in a LONG time. The characters and dialogue were so real, the plot was engaging and the emotions the book evoked were intense–from outright laughter to tears. I could not put this book down.

  82. I haven’t had the opportunity to read the book or see the movie yet but it sounds awesome. I am looking forward to reading this now and later see the movie.

  83. I have not read the book or seen the movie as of yet, but I do have a date with my husband to see the movie Saturday afternoon. I have heard so much positive buzz about the movie and am anxious to see a good movie with a sound original story. They do not come along too often anymore. Thanks for all of the inside info on the set. I will look for that jewelry box!!!

  84. Loved the book! I like that Skeeter stayed true even though she lost all her relantionships in the process. Will be seeing the movie with a great friend when she come into town in 2 weeks.

  85. I LOVED this book. It was the first one in a LOOONG time that I picked up and couldn’t put down. My husband grew up in rural Mississippi, so I imagined Ablileen being his “housekeeper”. Miss Mae was someone they all loved and appreciated. I can’t wait to see the movie. How lucky are you to have been on set?!?!?

    socalisa

p.s. I “liked” you on facebook!!

  86. I have not seen the movie or read the book. I prefer to read the book before I see the movie. And if I could get the book for free – what a better read it will be. thank you for the opportunity.

    Heather

  87. I so enjoyed this book. Not growing up in this country I felt I really understood how life was for people in this time. I laughed and cried. That is a great book!

  88. LOVED this book! Told everyone I know about it and even bought a few copies for friends that couldn’t get their hands on a copy from the library. I loved hearing the stories that the “help” went through during that time and I enjoyed reflecting personally on the things that have (and haven’t) changed since then. So excited for this movie! 🙂

  89. I absolutely loved this book. I just finished it back in early July and was mesmerized by it. I love historical fiction and think this would definitely fall in that category. It is amazing to think about how ignorant people were back then and how far we have come. I can’t wait to see the movie and will keep my paperback copy forever so I can pass it down to my girls when they are old enough! Thanks for sharing your experience…how awesome!!

  90. This was the best book I have read in years!! Last time I was so involved with the characters was J K Rowling’s Harry Potter.
I never wanted “The Help” to end. I could read about these characters forever!! I was hesitant to see the movie because I love this book. But now after this review I am looking forward to it!
I do not have Facebook! But I do have twitter. So I hope I still have a chance to win such a wonderful prize! 2/3 completed!

  91. of course the best part of the book is the chocolate pie! I was laughing so hard! When I had book club at my house for this book I had to make some too!

  92. I am anxious to read book and movie, but haven’t had opportunity just yet while helping daughter plan her wedding 11-11-11. Cannot wait!! Carol M in TX/carolswingster77@aol.com

  93. My favorite part of the book was the courage of the women to write their stories, knowing the risk they were all taking. This is a very, very special book. I have read it twice and hoping to see the movie soon.

  94. This is a book which gets under your skin. When I wasn’t reading it, I was thinking about it and when I finished it, I kept thinking about it for weeks. I wanted to know what happened to everyone after I turned that last page. How fun that you were able to go to the set of the movie. After I read the book, I remembered your post about visiting the set. The movie has a lot to live up to and I am so happy to read your review.

  95. I loved the book and can’t wait to see the movie. Me and my friends started a book club and this is our first selections. I’m trying so hard not to ditch them and see the movie ASAP. I will try to be good.

  96. I would love to read this book and see the move! I was just talking about it to one of my coworkers and my mom. Thanks for the opportunity!!

  97. How exciting for you to be there!! I enjoyed reading your review. I just finished reading the book and cant wait to see the movie!! Its hard to pick a favorite part in the book because I just loved reading it all! I have to say Aibileen is my favorite character in the book.

  98. Read the book and saw an early showing of the movie! Loved them both! I just loved how Abileen had such courage to contribute to the book.

  99. Really enjoyed the book but not expecting to like the movie so much from the previews I have seen. Yes, those times were not so very long ago. I made me sad when I read the part about the “colored library.”
And I felt so sorry for poor little Mae Mobley!

  100. I loved the book The Help. I entered to win several of the giveaways on the FB page. I am so glad you won. Sounds like you had an amazing time.
I am a professional nanny of 26 years. I loved the book because I understood the bond that those women had with those children that they loved and cared for. Many things have changed over the years but nannies and the bond they form with the children in their care will always be deep and lasting and painful when it ends.
I can’t wait to see the movie.

  101. I “liked” your fb page.

My favorite part of the book was the intermingling of the story lines from character to character between chapters and how they all fit beautifully together.

  102. I loved the character development in this book. I felt like I knew them and was cheering along with them, frightened for the, crying for them, and hoping the ‘mean girls’ gt what they deserved.

    I also “liked” your page:)

  103. I liked you on F B, and absolutely love all your blogs. I would love to win an autographed copy of The Help. I am so envious that you got to visit the movie set. How awesome…

  104. I LOVED LOVED the book. Growing up in the South in a family who had maids until I started school, it brought back so many memories for me. It also opened many lines of conversation between myself and my grandmother about the way things were.

I also agree about how amazing the movie is. I saw a preview last week & felt like the characters had simply came to life in front of me. I laughed & then I cried. At the end, I applauded & made plans to see it again.

My favorite scene in the book? The terrible awful. I just couldn’t help myself. Hilly deserved everything she got.

  105. This book actually made me do it; dive back into reading after two babies! Not only has this book brought me laughter, it has forced me to reclaim self! It is so easy to lose yourself in motherhood! The irony lies in the title of the story; it truly did “help” me as an individual. I was so intrigued by the character-development and suspense that I counted the minutes until my “quiet time” everyday when I’d read a chapter of four:)! Subsequently, I was more rejuvenated for my family and found myself able to parent more effectively and be a better, more attentive spouse!
So, now to the theater for some newly-found, appreciated and deserved mommy-time…and maybe a slice of chocolate pie!
Maybe I could re-charge my parenting “batteries” in MIssissippi too????

Comment and “like” left on Facebook! I heart Living Locurto! 🙂 A friend introduced me to you the other day and I’m hooked;especially on your back-to-school “printables!” You are a great reminder to all of us moms, to keep it fun! Thanks!

  106. I loved the relationships between the women in the book…I loved Abilene…she was my favorite

  107. Just borrowed my friends copy of the book, and can’t wait to read it. Also looking forward to the movie, AFTER I read the book.

What a fabulous trip you had.

  108. Oh, how I loved this book. I loved the humor, the honesty, and the characters. It’s not always easy to read the truth about that period of history, but it was a great story. My favorite part of the book is the maids themselves. What they endured, what they hoped for, the love they put into raising everyone else’s kids. This book made me laugh and cry then laugh again and cry again. I can’t wait to see the movie.

  109. I absolutely loved this book. This was on my summer reading list and I didn’t want it to end. Please do another book soon!! There are so many ways to explore these charachters or even a prequel. I loved Minnie the best!!

  110. What I loved most about the book was that it made me laugh. Given the time period and theme, one could easily go into the book angry. Ms. Stockett made told a story that engaged the reader to look beyond color, but to see the diversity of the characters. You see their growth from lesson learned (with the exception of Hilly).
I absolutely enjoyed the book and I will be going to the movie in about an hour. I can’t wait!
I liked your facebook page and sent a tweet also.

  111. Loved the book! Read in a weekend! I laughed, I cried, I enjoyed every last word of it! I can’t wait to see the movie this weekend! My favorite character was Skeeter!

I have already liked your facebook page. I’ve been a fan for quite awhile now! Awesome ideas!

Thanks Amy, I can’t imagine being able to shop in that fabulous warehouse. A junkers dream! You lucky girl!

    Jari

  112. I was raised outside of Savannah, GA by an African American lady named Mamie Belle. She taught me so many lessons that I use every day. I be kind to strangers, to cook with love because people can tell, and to always respect your elders even if you don’t agree with them. I’m 30 years old and I will be a mother in two months time. I hope my son will one day look up to me the way I look up to Mamie Belle. She took care of me when I was sick and couldn’t have loved me any more if she was my real mama. This book made me love and appreciate her even more. The movie was wonderful. I loved the attention to detail. The accents were true, the jewelry was spot on and the dishes were JUST PERFECT. I saw things I remember seeing in my great grandmothers house and I have a set of glasses just like Skeeter’s mama has in the movie.
I think this is one of the BEST book to movie adaptations I’ve ever seen. Good job to everyone involved. I’m ready to go see it again and buy the blue-ray as soon as it comes out. Thanks to everyone involved in this story- and thanks for making a SOUTHERN HEROINE in Skeeeter.

  113. I haven’t read the book yet, but I got the chance to see an advance screening of the movie a couple of months ago and I was blown away! It was so amazing, and I can’t wait to go see it now that it’s out for real. Seriously, I recommend it for anyone.

  114. Love the book! One of my all time favs! What I loved most is the fact that Skeeter had the “guts” to write a book, and publish it. I am sure that would have been hard to do, back in those days.

  115. what i loved best about the book, was the humor within such a serious topic. great writing can take you “somewhere else”. that’s what the book did for me. can’t wait to see the movie!

  116. Wow, how awesome that you were able to visit the set and meet the actors! I haven’t had a chance to read the book yet and would love too! We met you in Dallas at the Pioneer Woman’s book signing and have been following along since then. Love your websites!

Not on facebook, but would “like” you if I was! Hope that counts! 🙂

  117. I haven’t read the book or seen the movie yet but I want to do both! I want to read the book before I even think about seeing the movie. I would love to win this copy!

  118. I loved the book. It’s amazing to think that this part of our history was not that long ago. Can’t wait to see the movie! I loved the relationship between Minnie & Celia. Looking forward to the author’s next book.

  119. I LOVED the book. Was anxious to finish it, but then sad when the last pages were at hand. I have recommended this time and time over to everyone… Taking my mother and mother-in-law to see the movie after lunch tomorrow! Hoping it will do the book justice.
I loved Skeeter’s character — the *character* of her character and standing up against what she knew to be wrong, despite how in-grained the South was with pre-civil rights attitudes. I grew up in Texas and knew a few “old timers” who followed suit in this antiquated way of thinking – products of their environment. So glad it is not like that anymore.

Very jealous of your experience on set!!!
Fingers crossed! (Pick me! Pick me!)

  120. How lucky for you to get to visit the set! I loved the book and am reading it for the 2nd time right before we (3 generations) girls go see the movie! I liked you on FB as well!

  121. What a great story! Thanks for sharing the inside scoop!I loved the book and can’t wait to see the movie!

  122. I LOVED this book, recommended it to all my friends, and knew immediately that it would make a fantastic movie!! I’m so excited to see the movie, we are going tonight!!

  123. I was given a ticket to an advance screening of this movie and LOVED IT! I cried, then laughed, then cried, then laughed all the way through the movie.

I have not read the book, but after talking about the movie with my mother-in-law, he read the book, I can’t wait to sit down and read it… and now she can’t wait to see the moved!

You are SOOOOOO lucky you got to shop the warehouse!

  124. I loved EVERYTHING about the book…recommended it to all my friends, and after finishing the book I thought “this would make a fantastic movie!” So happy it is!! We are going to see the movie tonight, I can’t wait!!!

  125. I don’t have facebook or twitter so I can’t enter, but I did want to say, this is a great post, and it looks like you had a great time! I could not have restrained myself shopping in that warehouse! The book has been on my to-read list for a while now, and I look forward to getting to know the characters.

  126. i havent seen the movie yet, nor read the book, but i cant wait for the movie! it looks really good!!

  127. I loved this book so much…how attached you get to the characters, rooting for them to overcome the odds, crying with them ad laughing with them. Can’t WAIT to see the movie!

  128. Enter to win an autographed book of The Help. #TheHelpMovie #HelpLLGiveaway http://t.co/de6o7Io via @livinglocurto

  131. The movie hasn’t opened in our small town yet but can’t wait to see it. I would LOVE to read the book. I’ve heard lots of great things about it!

  132. I haven’t read the book but I’m planning on doing so right after I see the movie….I’ve always been a Sissy Spacek fan.

  133. I entered 3 times doing the three things you asked! I loved this book and know the movie will not disappointment either. Thanks for sharing your trip with us, just wonderful. Lucky you.

  134. I loved reading The Help. I was sad to finish the book because the characters were so realistic. I already Like your site on Facebook.

  135. I “LIKE”ed your Facebook page, and can’t wait to see the movie.

I loved the relationship and interaction of the writter and the maids. Interested as to how it will play out on the silver screen!

Would love to win a sighed copy or the book for my daughter who is an English Major.

  136. I absolutely love your comments about the movie and accounts of your visit to the set! Thank you for sharing, and for hosting such a great contest!

The main thing that I loved about the book was how it transported me to that era – kind of like you said the movie set did for you. I would get so wrapped up in whatever chapter I was on that when I had to stop reading and get back to real life, it took a minute to snap back and realize I was in the 21st century. I remember feeling so sad and heartbroken for Mae Mobley whenever Aibileen would talk about how little attention she got from her momma. My husband actually had to ask me one day why I was so down, and the only explanation I could give was that I had just read about Mae getting spanked for calling Aibleen momma. Sigh . . . I could go on and on, but I guess I’ve fulfilled my requirement to enter the contest and rambled enough. 🙂 Thanks again! Can’t wait to see the movie with my book club on the 20th!!!!

  137. It’s been about a year ,maybe not quite that long since I read the book. There were so many parts that were my favorite. How the book made the socialight site up in bed screaming het head off, how the girl writing the book gave mini and abilien more self respect and courage, how mini used the bathroom in the white folks house after they made her the one out back. I laughed through, cried through and enjoyed this book. At the end I wanted more. These characters were real and I could have continue to read about their lives and stories .so enjoyable!

  138. I haven’t seen the movie yet. But, I plan to. I loved the book. It was awesome! I most especially look back and laugh about the pie scene! That scene is priceless!

  139. Can’t wait to see the movie soon! As a nanny of 22+ years I’m looking forward to seeing the movie version as how the relationship between the help and the children/families has changed and hasn’t changed through the years.

  140. I loved the different attitudes, storylines told by different characters but how they all came together. Can’t wait to see movie.

  141. Hey the movie hasn’t come to my town yet but we are planning on going. Please include my name in your drawing I love your site.

  142. I have already read the book and was not disappointed! I am looking forward to seeing the movie and enjoyed the photos you posted above of the sets. What a fun experience that must have been! My favorite part of the book was how the kids adored Abileen and she raised them as her own. I also enjoyed watching Skeeter grow throughout the book and taking risks to have the maid’s stories published. There was something in this book for everyone.

I like you on facebook 🙂

Thank you for the opportunity to win a signed copy!

  143. I have not read the book yet–or watched the movie–but I am so getting the book! What a cute movie!

  144. I read the book last winter. It was definitely a tear jerker. I just can’t fathom that people would treat one another that way. But I think Kathryn Stockett did a great job of getting to the meat of the issue while keeping it light enough to enjoy the heart of the characters. I decided to choose it for my book club pick the month after I read it and Saturday my book club is going out to see the movie together.

  145. I bought the book right after it came out, having read great reviews…have since passed it on to 5 daughter 2 mothers and several ladies in book club…What I love most about the story is to read about how far we have come in overcoming intolerance and yet how far we still have to go…and how clueless those who are the worst offenders are.

  146. I haven’t seen the movie yet – but it is on my list. I would love to read the book – plus the autograph!! That would be fantastic! You are so lucky you got to go there – I love the pictures!! Already a fan on FB!!!

  147. First, I get your emails and had no idea I hadn’t ‘liked’ you yet on facebook – surely did that today!

Second, The Help is my all-time favorite book! I go to see it in Jackson, MS this Friday night. I am in my residency, so I never read books for fun any more. My sister gave me her audio copy, and I loved it & had the secretary in my department listen to it. A small Richmond, VA fan club grew from there.
This summer, I am doing training to treat kids with cancer at St Jude in Memphis, and I am staying in a motel in Mississippi. When I found out The Help was opening in August, I decided to make it a vacation. Tomorrow night (Thursday) my sister will fly in from Maryland and the 2 of us will head to Jackson on Friday. We have 9:00 movie tickets, and before that, we’ll go to Brent’s Drugs for dinner & then do the Help driving tour (available on the Jackson, MS travel site as a free download.) We’ll spend the night in Jackson & then go to Skeeter’s alma mater, Ole Miss in Oxford on Saturday. I’m so excited to see this movie! I feel like I lived with these women last summer, and the book changed the way I see things – I’ve become more aware of the differences in our society that still exist & must change.
Oh, and the secretary at my department at home has started raising chickens for eggs – their names are Minnie and Abie (Skeeter will be coming along soon.) What an amazing book. Lucky you for getting to see the set – that is awesome!!!

  148. I would love a chance at the Help giveaway . I read the book and coulnt put it down . no book impacted me like this one . I married and moved to Tx in the 70’s to know this was going on call me naive but had no idea . I laughed , cried and shocked . I can hardly wait to see the movie . To see if it matches my imagination of it
Thank you for the chance to win

  149. I have not read the book yet or seen the movie. I want to read the book prior to seeing the movie, so I would LOVE to win the book!! Great giveaway. Thanks!!!

  150. I loved the toilets on the front lawn! Can’t wait to see the movie. Read the book a few months ago when a friend lent it to me. Couldn’t put it down–great read. I’m a FB fan of yours!

  151. Leave a comment about the book. Is one possible. Truly one of the most amazing books I have ever read. Heard about it on Nate’s show and immediately ordered it and immediately read it 48 hours later. I grew up in California so I find it hard to believe in my life time people were treated like that. Aside from that the spunk and true inner beauty of these remarkable woman is inspiring and makes this book a must read for everyone. If this is not conversation for kids of the future to learn what not to do I am not sure what is. People are just that people and we should all treat each other with kindness and respect.
Yes I would love an autographed copy but mostly I hope people just go see this movie. I cannot wait!

  152. Oh, wow — that’s so exciting! The winner will be so very lucky…

I haven’t read the book yet, but I heard just the very best about it. In fact, I have recently ordered it from the library, but will have to wait at least another four weeks until I receive it. Something to look forward to! 🙂 The movie hasn’t been released in Germany yet, but I am pretty sure that I will watch it when it’s shown in the movies.

I don’t have a Facebook account, so I can’t like you there. However, I like you right here and subscribe to your newsletters. If that’s enough to qualify for your awesome giveaway, please count me in and thanks for the chance. If it’s unfair because I don’t do Facebook, just delete this comment, okay?

    Happy reading,
    Birgit

PS: Oh, and you didn’t mention if it’s okay to play if you don’t live in the USA. I am from Germany, so once again feel free to delete this comment if necessary.

  153. I haven’t read the book or seen the movie yet, but the segments I have seen about it on TV have been fascinating. Definately looks like a must-see!

  154. I havent seen the movie yet or read the book, but I am a huge Emma Stone fan! And from what you shared with us, I bet it was a real treat for you. How exciting they let you shop the props!?! I cant wait to see the movie!
    Thanks so much for sharing!!!

  155. I bought the book for Kindle on my Mac, but somehow it didn’t load! This book touches on many events in my own childhood. I grew up in Louisiana in the 60’s and had several beautiful woman who Loved me when it seemed that no one else did. I forever will Cherish those memories! How exciting that you got to have this adventure!! I’m looking forward to the rest of your story. Thanks for sharing! ~ Jo

  156. Loved the book…all of it! What I loved most is how the maids loved & cared for the children despite their parents’ words, actions, etc.

  157. Thanks so much for the review! Already a big fan of the book, and hoping that the movie would at least come close to doing it justice. Can’t wait to go see it!

  158. I havent been able to read the book yet, I’m number 107 on the library waiting list. Would really like to read it before I see the movie. What an amazing opportunity for you.

  159. This is the first book (sadly) that I have read in a long time. I could not put it down…just LOVED it. I can’t say I have one favorite part in the book. I loved the vantage point from Skeeter’s “eyes” which gave a stage to the real life/hardships that people lived not so long ago. I adored Celia and found that she is a lot like many of us who find themselves in situations where you just don’t fit in..as much as you try. Minnie was so funny and Aibileen was the love that brought this together so beautifully. I can’t wait to see the movie!

  160. I love, love, love this book!!!! I checked it out from the library and literally read it in two days on my front porch! I love all the characters and how developed each became!!!! I swear I didn’t want the book to end. When I was almost done with it, I got up to do some household work, so it wouldn’t end! When I heard they were making a movie I was so excited!!! And after your review, I can’t wait to see it!

  161. I loved this review!! I’m dying to see the movie but I want to finish the book first, which I’m in the middle of reading right now! I love Minny’s character…she cracks me up! How very cool that you got to meet her and the other actresses in person!!!

  162. In all honestly, I have not read the book or scene the movie yet, but I certainly want to read the book first. I keep hearing from all my book reading friends that the book is the best ever and sooooo hilarious. I’d love a chance to win it.
Also, I am already a friend of yours on facebook. Unfortunately, at this point I’m not a tweeter, so only two entries for me.
Thank you again and can’t wait to hear ore about your behind the scenes experience!
    Darcy

  163. I just recently picked up the book a friend recommended. Have not read it yet. I’m debating should I read the book first or see the movie first.

  164. i’ve liked you on facebook, for quite a while now! i enjoy your posts and giveaways…thanks so much!

  166. I’ve been wanting to read the book but can’t find it for kindle or ibook! maybe I’ll read it the old fashioned way if I win… 🙂

  167. I had downloaded the book on my iphone last week and once I started it, I could not put it down. I loved it. It would be great to have an actual copy of the book.

  168. Haven’t seen the movie, but I will hopefully see it this weekend. Would kind of be sacreligious not to go see if since I live in GREENWOOD, MISSISSIPPI where the movie was filmed! I know lots of people who were extras and can’t wait to see who I can see in the movie!

  169. We read this for bookclub last year and I fell in love with it! The history of the book is so real that you feel you are right there with them. This book is one of my top 5 favorite books.

  170. I loved the book! When we read it for book club, of course I brought Chocolate Pie! 🙂 Haven’t seen the movie yet, but I will!

  171. the help is right up there with jane eyre as one of my all-time favorite books. i already have plans to see the movie TWICE, so i’m very excited!

  172. I follow you on FB! I think I found your FB site b/c of something you pinned on Pinterest?

I loved the book. It is one of my top favorite 5 books. I love how the women come together and work together despite their differences.

  173. I loved all the different perspectives in the book. Seeing life through skeeters eyes and then Aibileen and Minnie and the other maids was eye opening, exciting and heart wrenching.

  174. I can’t wait to read this book and then watch the movie. I have heard it is so good! I am a fan on fb.

  175. I am so excited to read this book! I will not see the movie until I have finished it though. Would love a chance to win an autographed copy! Thank you. (I already follow you on Facebook too! 😉

  176. It was a wonderful read that allowed me to get an glimpse of a time/culture that I would never otherwise appreciate. Beautiful characters! Wonderful stories.

  177. What I loved most about the book was the way the dialogue was written. At first I thought the slang was going to be hard to read through but it just pulled me in. The words and phrases used really helped to transport me to that time period and feel like I was eavesdropping on all of these conversations.

  178. Great post! I can’t wait to see the movie! Unfortunately, I JUST rented this book from the library, so I don’t have any favorite parts yet 🙁 But I did like you on facebook! Thanks!

  179. I have not read the book yet, but my best friend & I are going to see the movie on Friday! I really want to read the book because the movie looks amazing. It looks like such an inspiring movie. I’m sure the book will be just as lovely as how the movie looks.

  180. We read this book last summer for our book club. It was a fun read. Growing up, chocolate pie was always my favorite and I would request it for my birthday instead of a cake. Now….I don’t think I can eat it unless I make it myself. 🙂

  181. The Help is now one of my favorite books. I just couldn’t put it down. I love how Skeeter did what she believed was right and taking such a risk. I can’t wait to see the movie!

  182. I just read the book for the first time last month. I loved it! Celia was my favorite character too. I loved the way Minny described her & her “hootchie” clothing. I’m not expecting the movie to be as good as the book, but I do hope I’ll like it.

  183. I loved the entire book! I have to say I thought Celia was the most interesting character. Different, clueless, but sweet as pie. She didn’t pull all the stunts that the other ladies did, all that catty stuff. And she loved Minny. Begging Minny to teach her how to cook…and then serving Minny’s food as her own! I just really liked her.

  184. I’ve been waiting to read the book until I see thee movie. I hate spending money on movies of books I love and being dissapointed. I know this is going to be a book I love!

  185. I loved the book! My absolute favorite!
What I loved was how one moment I could be laughing out loud and the next I could be so serious and sad. This book has it all and sheds a very important light on what it was like for black women in the 60’s.

  186. The thing I loved best about the book was that each of those Southern women followed their heart…no matter their social status. Such an inspiration and one great message that everyone can relate to.

Cannot wait to see the movie!

  187. I haven’t read the book yet, or seen the movie… But I’ve been dying to read the book. I want to read the book before I see the movie.

  188. Loved the book! Can’t wait to see the movie on Friday with book club gals. Of course I already “like” your FB page! Good luck to everyone!

  189. i LOVED this book – first one i had read in awhile that i just could not put down! i loved aibileen’s character, and can’t wait to see the movie!

  190. @Meredith,
My sister bought the book last year then passed it to my mom who passed it to me! I loved the book (so did they) and we have a date this Saturday to go to the movie together. Being from the South, I love books that show southern culture and how far we have come! Congratulations on getting to be on the movie set and thanks for your review of the film.

  191. I loved learning more about that time period. It wasn’t long ago but the way some people were treated was terrible. It’s important for us to remember so we don’t repeat “our” mistakes.

  192. I bought the book for my Mom and after she reads it, will pass it along to me! I can’t wait! I love sharing books! We will see the movie together! P.S. – I “liked” you a long time ago on F/B ! 🙂

  193. Wow, how exciting for you! The props would be so much fun to shop. I haven’t read the book or seen the movie yet but want to read the book before seeing the movie so winning this would be awesome.

    Thanks for the chance!
