Jekyll Island Club Resort Review: A Travel Blogger’s Honest Take on the Best Place to Stay

A Short History of Jekyll Island

Jekyll Island, a beautiful barrier island off Georgia’s coast near Brunswick and an hour from Savannah, is known for its pristine beaches and rich history. Once an exclusive Gilded Age retreat for America’s elite, it housed the famous Jekyll Island Club frequented by Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, and Morgan.

This club has been resorted and turned into a beautiful resort. After my Self-Guided Savannah Ghost Walk Tour, I headed down the Golden Isles to this beautiful island.

Visitors can explore the Jekyll Island Historic District, a National Historic Landmark with restored cottages and museums, offering a perfect mix of natural beauty and historic charm.

The Jekyll Island Club Resort is by far the BEST place to stay on Jekyll Island. Booking at the Club Resort gives you the best of both worlds—historic charm and beach access. Guests enjoy complimentary shuttle service and full access to the Beach Club’s pool and oceanfront perks without sacrificing the character and beauty of the original Club property.

Beautiful Historic Grounds and Modern Rooms

The historic property is stunning, perfect for slow strolls and photography. I loved relaxing in common areas that felt like stepping back in time, then retreating to a modern, updated guest room for comfort. If you love the Guilded Age, then this resort is a must for you!

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Island Entry Fee: There’s a $10 fee to get onto Jekyll Island, and you’ll pay again if you leave and return the same day.
  • Warm Rooms: Rooms can run hot. My A/C didn’t cool below 76°F—bring a portable fan or request one. -> Here is my Favorite Portable Fan!
  • Service Levels: While the resort looks 5-star, the service feels more like “island time.” Expect slower service, possible tour cancellations, and limited staff during off-season.
  • Food is Average: Honestly, the resort food was underwhelming, but you have to remember I’m a foodie and vacation food is what I live for!
    • The Wharf has gorgeous sunset views but serves your typical beach bar food. Cocktails and wine are served in plastic cups.
    • Eighty Ocean – I only ate there for lunch, but the items I wanted on the menu were not available, so I opted for a burger. It was burned, but packed with delicious pimento cheese which saved it for me.

What About the Jekyll Island Beach Club?

I’m glad I didn’t pay extra to stay at the Jekyll Island Beach Club which is their newer resort directly on the beach. While the resort and pool are beautiful, the ocean water is brown and murky, not inviting for swimming. It’s great for bike rides and sitting by the sand, but I preferred the Club’s gorgeous pool and gardens.

Final Thoughts

Despite a few drawbacks, I absolutely loved the Jekyll Island Club Resort. The atmosphere, historic charm, and range of activities make it the best place to stay on the island.

Yes, it costs a bit more than other resorts on the island, but the convenience and experience are worth it. If I return, I’ll skip the beach and soak up the slow, timeless vibe of the Club’s gardens, pool, and historic elegance.
