This weekend was my Totally Awesome 80′s Birthday Party!
I’m lucky to have some great friends who were my partners in crime for this hilarious party. My birthday isn’t until later this month, but we were celebrating my 40ish and another friend’s 50ish birthdays together… so why wait?!
Since we all grew up in the 1980′s, this birthday party theme was so rad and totally awesome to plan!
Enjoy all of the totally awesome party details below…
80′s Dessert Table
I found a few old boxes from high school and used some of those items to decorate a cute neon dessert table. From 80′s stickers and records to old magazines and concert shirts, the table was like, totally tubular!
My daughter and I splattered neon paint all over a large white board for the backdrop, along with displaying my 1988 Poison concert shirt over a foam board. Then I decorated around that with various posters and 80′s items.
My size 3 acid washed pencil skirt from high school was the perfect material to wrap over a box to give the cupcakes height on the table. Because goodness knows that my 40 something butt was NOT going to fit into it! ha!
I found neon girls tights on sale at Target which I cut up to cover mason jars full of glow sticks. I loved this idea and thought it turned out so cute! We had black lights around the table, so everything was glowing!
I hot glued cassette tapes together and placed a record on top to create a simple cake stand. I did the same for the large cupcake stand for the centerpiece. (I will explain how I did the larger one in a future post.)
I had a blast finding old saying from my favorite 80′s movies for cupcake toppers!
80′s Photo Booth
Of course it wouldn’t be my kind of party without a fun photo booth! We splattered more neon and glow in the dark paint on a roll of white seamless paper, which made a perfect backdrop for silly photos.
That is my first concert shirt… Rick Springfield’s 1983 tour! Gotta love it. My kids came for a bit and said “Mommy… you don’t look like yourself. You look like a teenage girl.” We all laughed because most of our kids said the same thing!
Later we moved the photos over to the karaoke machine stage area. All 80′s songs for sure.
More 80′s Party Decor
I had an 80′s Beauty Bar if anyone’s hair got flat and they needed to fix it. We can’t have flat hair at an 80′s party right??
Since the party was in the backyard of my friend’s house, I designed a “mullet sign” for her front door wreath that said “Business in the front, party in the back!… No really, we’re in the back.”
I have to tell you that I LOVED Andre Agassi back then. He was awesome. LOL!
We even splattered painted the black goodie bags. The perfect job for my 7 year old!
To bring even more 80′s nostalgia to the party, I made pink lemonade and lime jello shots!
The pink lemonade shots were made with a concoction of strawberry jello, pink lemonade, plain gelatin and vodka. I don’t remember the exact ingredients for them, but they turned out really good! I just kept tasting them until they were tasty and not too strong. Maybe that is why I can’t remember what I put in them. ha!
Lime was my favorite and so yummy. Here is the recipe if you want to make them for your own party.
Lime Jello Shots Recipe
- 1 small pack of Lime Jell-O
- 1/4 -1/2 Cup Midori melon liqueur (You can add as much or little as you want!)
- 1 cup water
- Small Jello Shot Cups
1. Warm the bottle of Midori by boiling water in a sauce pan, remove the cap, then set the bottle in the saucepan of hot water for about 5 minutes.
2. Stir one cup of boiling water into the jello until dissolved. Add the hot Midori. Pour mixture into in small cups and chill for up to 4 hours.
This recipe makes 12-14 shots.
I hope you had fun looking through my party photos!
I’ll be working on designs and photo props for the 80′s Party Printables next. Check back soon for those!!!
