Easy DIY Paper Lunch Bag Gift Wrap Idea & Tutorial
Whip out those sewing machines to turn an ordinary paper bag into a fabulous gift bag!
I love a good DIY gift and have a talented friend Christel, who can sew just about anything. When I saw her homemade gift bags at a birthday party, I squealed with delight! Not only is this gorgeous gift wrap, but so easy even I could do this simple sewing craft.

So skip the expensive gift wrap and make your own! By adding a simple zig-zag stitch down the sides of a standard brown paper lunch bag, you can instantly create a gorgeous, custom packaging solution for party favors, treats, and small gifts.
This easy DIY tutorial takes just minutes to pull together, but the rustic-chic results look like they came straight from a specialty boutique.

Directions for Paper Gift Bag Craft
Just sew the side of a paper bag, fold over the top, punch a hole for a ribbon, then add a pretty tag and you’re all set to wow someone with your talents! I’ve got the detailed directions for this easy tutorial below.
DIY Paper Bag Gift Wrap
Equipment
- Standard brown paper lunch bags
- Sewing machine with coordinating or contrasting thread.
- Hole punch
- Ribbon or baker’s twine
- Gift tags
Instructions
- Prep the Bag: Open your brown paper lunch bag and fill it with your chosen gift, treats, or party favors. Leave enough empty space at the top so the bag can fold over neatly (about 2 to 3 inches).
- Stitch the Sides: Fold the top opening flat. Feed the side edges of the bag through your sewing machine, running a decorative zig-zag stitch down both sides. Tip: Go slowly to ensure a clean stitch through the paper.
- Fold the Top: Fold the top edge of the bag down toward the front (or back, depending on your preferred look) to create a clean, finished flap.
- Punch and Secure: Center your hole punch right through the folded top flap and punch a single hole through all layers of the paper.
- Add the Finishing Touches: Thread your favorite ribbon or baker’s twine through the hole, slide on a pretty custom gift tag, and tie it off into a neat bow. You're all set to wow someone with your talents!
Thanks Christel for inspiring me to wipe the dust off of my sewing machine and get to crafting.
