  1. Could these be baked instead of microwaved? I wonder if that would help with the candy melting and the marshmallows not getting puffy as fast.

  2. I cut the marshmallows into thirds (dipping your knife into flour before each cut helps stop sticking) Put the sticky side up so the yellow wafer will stick to it and not shift when you nuke it. Put the yellow wafer flat side up so the choc chip will not slide. I put the choc chip on right away and nuked them individually on a plate at med heat (level 5 on my microwave) for 15 seconds. The marshmallows puff up but not ridiculously. When you take it out, push down on the choc chip a bit so it will stick into the yellow wafer. Remember, the yellow wafer will keep melting after you take it out so you can push it down a bit for the next couple of minutes while the yellow wafer is still warm.
And keep your hands off the melted marshmallow or you end up with a big mess because it sticks to your hands.

  3. cute, but time is NOT correct…9 sec for the marshmallows then I did the candy melts with a choc chip on top of it for 40 sec then topped the warm marshmallow.

  4. I had trouble with the candy melts too. I nuked them in the microwave for about 1 minute (6 pieces) then carefully spooned them for the eyes.

  5. I know you asked a while back, but in case you haven’t found out. . . They are little circle candies that melt very easily. I think it could be white chocolate and it comes in lots of colors. They’re great for making candies. You can buy them at any craft store (Joann, Hobby Lobby, Michaels, etc). They also sell them at my local Walmart in the craft section.

  6. HELP! So excited about making these, but what’s a candy melt?! I feel really silly not knowing this–could you give an ex of a brand name?

  7. We just made these but had some issues so if anyone one else has problems here is what we did. Our marshmallows were expanding too much, our candy melt was not melting and thus the chocolate chips wouldn’t stay. Sooo, I melted the candy wafers and put them into a squeeze bottle. I cut the marshmallows into thirds and microwaved for 9 seconds. I squeezed on big circles of melted chocolate and then added our chocolate chip and candy corn. I wonder if we have a weak microwave…
At any rate, fantastic idea and turned out really cute! Thanks for sharing!!

  8. Thank you so much for such an adorable treat. My daughter is an owl fan, and will be enthralled!

  9. I have been waiting and waiting for the right occassion to make these adorable owls! I bought my ingredients and did a dry run tonight before having to send them to school next week with my daughter.

My question is how do you manage to get the marshmellows to begin to melt without one becoming much larger than the other? I tried everything I could think of and still they were mismatched! It’s the perfectionist in me I guess but seems as if at least the eyes should be sort of close to the same size.

  15. Thanks for the great idea. I just signed up for your blog. I made these this weekend for the cheer-leading squad’s half-time treat. What a hit! Love your site!

  16. I made these last night with my daughter, but I couldn’t find candy melts so we used gummi-savers. They worked like a charm, the chocolate chip fit in the center of the candy, if you set it upside-down. I had to microwave them longer, like 10 seconds, to get everything to stick together and I had to put them together BEFORE I put them in the microwave. If I didn’t all the candy fell off. We made them for a bake sale at her school. They are super cute, and a really great idea. Thanks, I’m glad I found your site.

  17. OMG. i love this so flippin much. we make treats for the collegiate chapter of my college sorority, chi omega every year before finals and this would be amazing…the owl is our symbol!! thanks for the simple idea )

  19. Adorable! I love the owls. I could see doing a black (or, really, brown) cat with chocolate graham crackers and green candy melts. Not sure what to use for the nose though…maybe cut a strawberry Starburst into a triangle?

  20. These are super cute! One question, you didn’t specify on the marshmallow’s. Do you use the mini ones or the regular size one?

  21. This is so cute, and totally brings a smile to my face. They would be darling additions to any party, thanks for sharing! ?

  22. I love all of your ideas and free printables. I have used many of both and passed them along to friends. Just wanted to tell you that your website is wonderful! Thank you so much for helping make me a super crafty mom!

  23. These are adorable – and something I haven’t seen before. I wonder if I could do something similar with the graham cracker, but then add banana slices, then small pineapple or nectarine circles topped with raisins for the eyes. I’d keep the candy corn though – 1 piece isn’t the end of the world!

In my daughter’s class, for class celebrations they are only allowed one sweet treat, and the rest of the party snacks need to be healthy – I’d love some ideas for healthy Halloween party treats!

  24. Amy- I love it! Thanks so much for working on an owl party:) Can’t wait to see whatelse you do for this theme.
