I am stepping out of my comfort zone today. I’m nervous and I’m scared that I will scare YOU. Like you will watch this and turn off your computer and run for the hills! (or at least the nearest Starbucks).

Please do me a favor and watch this, I promise, it’s not really that long… really. And when you do run off to Starbucks, I’d love a tall, non-fat, no whip Cafe Mocha. Thanks!

  1. I’m afraid of failing. I want to start a blog but I worry that no one will read it or like it. I want to be a party planner but I worry that I’m not crafty enough and that no one will hire me. So my fear is failure. Can you offer any advise on how t conquer a fear? And I’d love advise on starting a blog, how do you get yourself known? Thank you! And thanks for suggesting the book Start, I will look for it!

  2. Amy your so cute. I loved seeing you on video. Can’ wait to follow along.

  3. I was totally terrified of Vlogging since I hate public speaking but decided to link up a couple weeks ago and it is not so bad. You did great.

  4. Good job on your first video! I also need to start doing some videos and a blog and/or vlog. Where is the best place (free) to do a blog that connects to my website, facebook biz page, and newsletters? Thanks for your advice in advance! Also, how to get traffic to my FB biz page would be helpful. I am like all of the other ladies that fear failure in being self employed.

  5. Good for you for getting out there and making a video. But I’ll warn you, once you vlog, you won’t want to stop. 🙂

  6. Hey Amy, I had this same fear about 10 years ago. I didn't know where to start with the party business. Then I found out about blogging and found my passion for helping people, marketing, planning parties, and computers all in one place! Just start small and build on things as you go. Get that Jon Acuff book. It will motivate you!

  7. It is such a relief to see someone in a video rather in some polished, perfect photograph. You are beautiful, and I feel like I have a glimpse of the real you. I am terrified of people seeing the real me online. And I had to laugh when you admitted to normally wearing pajamas, etc. Knowing that you are a real person as well as an amazing blogger/photographer/crafter makes me love you even more.

My biggest fear that is hindering me right now is getting back to blogging. My mother passed away six years ago after a long fight with early-onset dementia, and I was so grief-stricken I could no longer blog. At the time, my children were eleven and fourteen, I was a homeschooling mom, and I dabbled in photography. Now I don’t know who I am or what to blog about, but I have a strong desire to write. My youngest is headed to college this fall, I’m no longer homeschooling, and I haven’t touched my camera (except for a couple of occasions) in years.

Where do I start? What do I write about? I am frozen in fear. I worry about my grammar. I worry about what someone I know in real life would think if they stumbled across my blog. I spend time tinkering on the back end of my blog rather than actually writing anything. Can you help?

  8. Great Job Amy! You looked like a vlogging pro!
I'm biggest fear is creating something, ex. Designing a Party, and thinking that it looks great and the rest of the world disagrees, but is too "nice" to tell me.

  9. Hi Amy, I loved your video, because hearing your voice connects me to your blog. I can now see you saying something I am reading.
My biggest fear is success, am a big saboteur of myself. I have been in direct sales for years & not really made much money. (Great hobbies) I am in one now I really love & I want to see this succeed. I need to start working on it NOW! I have been putting off getting Jon’s book, but I am going to get it today!
    Thanks
    Susan

  10. Way to go, Amy! Way to face your fear! This video thing is my fear as well…so you are MUCH braver than I! You inspire us {@makinglifewhimsical} on a daily basis and I'm thrilled to hear what is to come! You have so much passion, heart and TALENT! I look forward to more videos and INSPIRATION! xoxo {by the way…still in my PJs too!}

  11. Thanks for sharing your fear of doing videos. I have been thinking about creating a blog but I am not sure where to start. I have a lot of life lessons that I am going through right now and I fill like if I share my experiences that it might help someone else. I love your post and am looking forward to watching more of you on videos.

  12. Amy-
Thank you for doing this video. I’ve admired you for years. I work FT as a marketing professional at a Bank and absolutely hate it. They don’t utilize my talents–basically I get paid to sit. I want to create, grow and help an organization grow! I tried to start my own marketing consulting firm a year ago, but working FT and having active kids–it was next to impossible. My husband doesn’t support the idea either, he is worried about the inconsistency of getting paid. Then, there is the self-doubt–I’ve been searching for 3 years to get out of the bank and into a different industry (doing marketing) and haven’t been hired. Maybe I’m too stale and no one wants me? Maybe I’m not as good as I think I am.
So, after many years reading blogs, I decided–what the heck, I’ll try it. I love it. Its my creative outlet (since I’m not able to at work), but I am having a hard time getting (avid) followers. I can’t spend a lot of time on it because right now its just a hobby (remember, I work FT at a bank that doesn’t use me???!!). How do I move on, move up and do something better, grand, and amazing? I love change. But, I’m afraid of letting others down and failing.
You are a marketing professional with a successful blog. Would you give us your top 10 must-do’s?
Also–how do you figure out what your true passion is? I love to cook, bake, craft, graphic design, marketing, event planning, organizing…how to I choose? Do I have to? And, how do I sell it to my husband?
Maybe I should have sent you an email, not such a long comment! Thanks for listening.

  13. Oh I love it Amy! You are too cute.
I'm so scared of not only failing at a new venture that I am starting but having others see me fail. Eeeekk. How embarrassing.
Thx for for putting yourself out there!
    Xoxo

  14. Hi! I am fairly new to your blog. Thanks for this topic and your willingness to be open to questions. I would like to go to a conference but which one? I am a writer (not DIYer or crafter or party planner although I sometimes blog about those projects). I also would like to market myself better but here is where the FEAR kicks in: I have such a block on letting my Facebook friends know about my blog. I am not on Twitter or Instagram or even a logged-in member of Pinterest (I stalk it). Are these things absolutely crucial? Thanks!

  15. You did great and you are totally adorable! I have been wanting to do videos for a while now ~ did a few but not showing me {I’m in jammies and grungy craft clothes most of the time}. I want to grow my blog…my biggest fear, which I am facing now, is breaking away from limitations and restrictions that I have set for myself. I’m like you ~ I want to do videos where I show what I’m doing and show my life…authenticity. Thanks for the encouragement and it’s so good to know that you {someone I have admired for so long} has the same sort of fears as I do.

  16. Wonderful job, Amy!! I think you did fabulous. I’m still working my way through my Blissdom copy of START. What an amazing book! For the last six months, I’ve been in the process of opening my own printable shop. I’m terrified at failing at it. I left many clients who I’d worked with for years to do this…it was my nice, comfy job that I’d worked so hard at to grow, but now it was becoming stale {comfy & easy…but stale}. I know this is what I’m meant to do…but the thought of failing at it is terrifying. Time to punch the fear in the face, huh?
Thanks bunches for putting yourself out there. You did a wonderful job!

  17. Thanks for watching AND commenting. ha! I think we all have this same fear of rejection. If I can make a video, you can too! Check out Mama Kat's prompts and join me:-)

  18. Ohhhh! It was great! Video blogging fear attacked head on…. CHECK! :-)) #happinessISAtoDoListWithCheckmarks.

  19. Thanks Molly! That's good to hear. I will get on the ball and try to get better at this. I think crafting would be MUCH easier for me than talking. ha!

  20. I had this same fear about 10 years ago. I didn't know where to start with the party business. 21. Congrats, Amy! Good for you for facing this fear! I've thought about vlogging for a long time ~ ever since I met Mama Kat at a conference a while back! I've created one or two videos but never published them! Maybe I should follow in your footsteps and just do it!

  22. You did a great job. I think many people share the same fears, as for me it would be making the video and having not a single person comment or respond. Can you say fear of rejection! It was nice to see you put yourself out there. Doing something like that tend to give permission to others to do the same. I personally would LOVE to see more video tutorials from you!

  23. Amy, you are tooooo cute! I loved the video, I would love to see more videos. I love to craft and I had to leave my school nurse job due to Fibromyalgia. So, I am always looking for ways to make money from home. Kudos to you! 🙂

  24. Growing a business IS a scary thing. I don't think you're alone there. With growth means managing people, etc. But you never know until you try:-) Maybe start small with part time help. I have hired a ton of part time employees over many years. It's also a great way to get to know if you can work well with someone or not. Good luck!

  25. First of all, I loved the video! It was great to see you and put a voice to the face! I like reading your blog and hearing your voice in my head at the same time.
Next, fear. What am I afraid of? Well, that one is easy – I’m afraid of starting my own blog! It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, but what if no one reads it, what if I run out of things to say, what if I sound stupid and worst of all – what if people actually read it and no one likes it? Ugh! It’s all just too scary to even think about, so I just don’t do it!
I know the fear is holding me back, but I’ve gotten so comfortable with the fear that it’s easier to just do nothing!

  26. I have a fear of failing. I am afraid to invest too much into my cookie business for fear that I'll have to tell people that I've failed. I really need to hire help, yet I'm afraid to have someone depend on ME and MY BUSINESS for paying their bills. It leaves me in a strange place: Grow my business vs. keeping it constant. That may not make sense to a lot of people – but I bet it rings true for a lot of small business chicks like me.

  27. I love following your blog and absolutely love that you’ve decided to put yourself out there and do this video!
Ok so my fear is failing at my start-up business (photography) and coincidentally I have been researching how to set up website and blog (I have a Weebly site, but I don’t think that counts, lol) that is searchable so people can find me! I’d love to pick your brain!

  28. Good for you! I would love to see paper craft videos.New to card and scrapbooking. You would be great! Hope to learn this craft from you.I have a fear of cutting into my paper and not knowing the right way. I have a stash I would like to start with. Thanks for chance to let us know what we would like to see!

  29. I would love to see videos of you crafting, I do get scared to try some crafts that look tricky, but have always wanted to be that Mom that made her teachers, neighbors, etc their gifts:) but to see someone doing it always helps me to get started!

  30. Amy you are such a sweet speaker! my kids left there games and were listening to you 🙂 speak on! I would love to learn more about hot to license my work.. 🙂

  32. Hi Amy. Love your name. Thank you for making the video. I, too have fears. I want to make a living out of something party related, but can't figure out where to start. I love baking, decorating goodies, parties for every occasion and making kids feel special. I guess my biggest fear is doing it wrong, failing and giving up on my dream. I could really use some help.

  34. My biggest fear is, planning a party, Everytime an occasion comes a long, I offer my kids money not to have a party. I’ve got a high school graduation coming up and I fear no amount of money is going to persuade him not to have a party.

  35. You had me at "hey ya'll" Seriously, love this idea and will be excited to see more. Bravo for punching that fear in the face!
