Ingredients

  • 1 frozen puff pastry
  • 4.4 oz chocolate bar semi-sweet or milk chocolate
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoons shaved almonds
  • 1 tablespoon powdered sugar

Instructions

  • Place the frozen dough on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. After the dough has defrosted unroll it.
  • Place the chocolate bar in the middle of the dough.
  • Make cuts along the edges of the dough. (See graphic on blog post for more detail.) Make as many cuts along the sides as you want, just make sure to have the same amount on each side.
  • After cutting 6-8 strips of dough on the sides, you are ready to braid.
  • Fold the top and the bottom ends over the chocolate first, then cross the side strips over each other to make the braid.
  • Brush the braid with an egg wash you can make with one beaten egg and a splash of cool water.
  • Bake the pastry according to the package directions. Most puff pastry requires an oven temperature of 425 degrees.
  • Remove the braid before it gets golden brown.
  • Top with almonds and then place back into oven until golden brown for about 2-3 minutes.
  • Let it cool for about 10 minutes, then dust with powdered sugar.
  • Serve while it is still warm and gooey!

  1. So, the recipe says pull it out before it gets golden brown, but doesn’t give you an idea of wen that might be. Set my timer for 15 min, but after I added the almonds, they seemed to fall to the bottom of the pan and burn. I would say, that i makes more sense after 10-12 min, and then bake at least another 8-10. Just watching until it is slightly brown isn’t enough info.

Tastes good though. Just lame baking instruction.

  2. could you please give me the nutritional values of this bake goodie !!!! Thanks

  3. This is a great recipe for a quick dessert. I make a few and freeze them, unbaked, then when I’m having company I take one out of the freezer for a 1/2 hour and bake it. Your company will think you baked all day. The diagram of how to cut the pastry for braiding is helpful but I think you should mention in the instructions that at each end on each side you will have to cutout a piece for the braiding.

  4. So easy and so delicious!! I made two one with almonds and one without because of allergies, they were both fabulous! Served them with vanilla ice cream and fresh strawberries!!

  5. Thanks so much! Glad you like this as much as we do. Yes, just bake as long as the directions on the puff pastry directs. Toasty almonds are the best!

  6. Hi. I’ve done this recipe twice now. And since it doesn’t say how long to bake it before adding there almonds, I can say to try for 10-11mins before adding almonds. And then another 10 with almonds. Especially since most recipes online call for a total of 20 mins at 415 degrees

Also thank you so much for putting this recipe online. It’s easy, deleicious and always comes out looking beautifully
