When Your Cat Has a Litter Box Problem
Here’s my problem and why I am excited about nice smelling cat litter. My cat Apollo, is a VERY fancy feline. If you pet him, he will clean that exact spot of fur. He turns his nose up at messes like no other cat I’ve ever had.
We laugh at how he is a five star cat and the king of the house! Our cat is so fancy, that even getting his paws in the kitty litter is beneath him. Therefore he prefers to poop right next to the litter instead of in it! Argh!
It’s a constant battle to get Apollo to use the kitty litter. Obviously he could care less…
The quest to get my cat to go poo in his kitty litter box will hopefully end now!

If you have a cat too, I hope you enjoy this easy DIY idea to hide your cat’s kitty litter in your home!
What you’ll need to make a Cat Litter Box Holder:
- Large storage container big enough to hold your litter box
- Cat litter box
- Cat litter box liners
- Tidy Cats LightWeight Kitty Litter
- Contact paper or a Cat Litter Mat
- Tools: Jigsaw and Drill
- Optional: kitty litter cleanup kit and battery operated light
First I used a jigsaw to cut a rectangle shape in a large plastic storage box, big enough for him to walk through.
I then added some contact paper liner on the bottom of the storage container and put the cat litter box inside full of nice-smelling Tidy Cats LightWeight with Glade Tough Odor Solutions Clean Blossoms.
I added a battery-operated light and new clean up kit. Then decorated the outside for my very fancy cat!
Next, I drilled ventilation holes in the lid over the area that covers the kitty litter. I made a cat shape for my box!
Do Cats Like Covered Litter Boxes?
You can add the lid to the box or take it off, depending on your cat. Putting the lid on it when guests come over is a great idea to hide the litter. The storage box I found has wheels on the back, so I can move it around the house anytime!

Since Apollo was curious, I tested it out my new DIY Cat Litter Box Holder by putting on the lid and turning on the light.
Apollo brings my family so much joy, that I’m happy to create a nice space just for him! He seems to really like it so far. I’m crossing my fingers this easy DIY cat litter box idea is fancy enough for him though. ha!

Update: Did my cat use this homemade litter box?
It’s been several years since I made this DIY kitty litter box, so here’s the update. Apollo used this kitty litter for a while, it was wonderful while it lasted! ha! Our new cat uses this litter box now.
I now have a small children’s plastic pool full of kitty litter that he uses. At nearly 20lbs, he is just way too big for a normal litter box. We still use Tidy Cats LightWeight litter. It’s the only kind he likes!

I cant use a cat box liner because Tika rips them to shreds. : ) My problem is that I’m such a procrastinator (hmmmm…lazy?) I don’t scoop the litter nearly as often as I should. Tika is at least 12 yrs old – I inherited her when my Mom passed on 2010 and she had her for a while before that. (I hate it when people want you to ‘do away’ with a pet because “It’s just a dog…or it’s just a cat” When Mom passed finding an apartment that would allow my dog was hard but he was a friend/companion not just a dog/pet)
Did the tidy cats litter solve the problem of cat pooping outside the box?
We are having that problem and can’t find a solution
We searched for years for a solution for our old man who just misses the box sometimes! Wish I’d see this blog earlier, but we ended up coming up with the exact same idea! With a twist! Instead of contact paper, since our old guy pees over the edge sometimes, I lay down puppy training pads! If he goes over the edge, it is 1. Almost always completely absorbed by the puppy liner and 2. Any off the puppy pad is still in the plastic bin. No more pee on my floors!

Where did you get the holder for the scoop?
This idea will be perfect for camping with 2 cats. The litter box goes in the camper shower and it is a pain to clean up the litter that inevitably ended up outside the litter box. This will make the 2 times a day litter box cleaning much easier. Thanks so much for sharing the idea.
