“Before & After” My Story in Photos
Angie and I go through each (yes we really do!) photo challenge entry and it’s been very obvious, since starting I ? Faces in January, how much everyone’s photography has improved. We’ve not only seen improvement in photos, but also improvement in web sites! I remember in the beginning looking at tiny photos on jam packed blogs. Now I notice a lot of new blogs with nice large photos! WOW! You guys are getting so good. We are proud of our little online community!!
This week we thought it would be fun to have you post a photo from when you first started your photography hobby/journey. Then post a photo you’ve taken recently so we can see the progress. We’d love to hear about your journey and what you’ve learned since we started I ? Faces.

My journey into photography has been so much fun. I am learning a ton about the technical part that I could have cared less about a year ago! Here is a photo I entered in one of our beginning photo challenges.
Before
This is cute, but I don’t know why I had the flash on? It looks like it was dusk outside which would have made for some nice lighting. Now I am WAY more aware of the lighting in the room. If it’s bad inside… I move everyone outside or make sure they are facing a window with good light. I think I could have captured this just the same if I had moved her outside.
After
Now I make sure to take photos with good light. See how sparkly her eyes are with the light reflecting in them? Much nicer!
Another thing I do now is take more face photos! I’m sure if you participate in our weekly challenges you do the same thing. If I see a cute kid… I’m all over taking their photo. ha! This is my friend, Michelle’s little girl. Isn’t she cute?
She was a great model and let me move her away from her snack at the picnic table above to a spot with a much nicer background.
Yes, since starting this web site, I’ve become even more bossy when it comes to taking photos! ha! I make people stand up and move them around way more than before! People groan, but they thank me when they see their final photo:-)

Great after photos, I also love getting good catchlights and spend more tme on the eyes in post processing
iheartfaces has been such a great resource for me in the last couple of months. I look forward everyday to coming over and seeing what’s new and gleaning all I can to try out for myself. Thanks for running it and inspiring all of the JSOs (like myself) as well as the pros.

This is wonderful! I love iheartfaces and though I don’t always play, I have learned so much.
These are lovely. I love good lighting too! I hate shooting if the light isn’t good 🙂 …. love the face in the first after pic!
That is one of the major things I have learned about photography from I Heart Faces. Use natural light as much as possible and try to capture the catch lights in the eyes. It really does make a huge difference. Thanks! Love the last shot.

Her expression is adorable. I’ve had my camera for about 8 months now and I have just started to pay attention to lighting and playing with photoshop and elements.

I agree, the journey into this world of photography has been fun and just like with anything else…it’s been made even more fun doing it with others. Thanks again to you, Angie, and the other contributors for all your hard work to provide us a place to go as we continue to learn and grow. BTW, Iighting was one of the first things I learned too when starting…though I still have lots to learn in that area. Your captures of light…beautiful.
i always love your photographs! i try to emulate what you do with the eyes…i still have a ways to go, but i’m enjoying the journey :O).
Wow. The difference is amazing! I love willing children models : ) That is my favorite, favorite thing! I think I need to produce some willing children models since Kaish is sick to death of pictures : )

I’ve learned quite a lot as well. I also avoid the incamera flash as much as possible and have learned to play around with the settings.
That was definitely my biggest breakthrough in photography…learning about lighting. Now, I only use flash if the lighting can’t be improved at all. Helps that I also have an external flash…the onboard one is useless.
Honestly, I think I’m a slow learner with photography. I see some of the participants and how much they have improved…way beyond anything I do. It’s inspiring!
