Off to Oklahoma

I’m headed home to my small town in Oklahoma for a week vacation.

It’s good to go home, back to the country to fish in this pond.

To feed this chicken who even has her own blog and Facebook page!

Hang out with my hip 80 something Grandma.

To take my mom shopping for a computer and help her hook up the internet at her house. (Yes, she does not have the internet… gasp!) I’m voting for this, then I can use it while I’m there!

We’re also planning on attending Ree’s (The Pioneer Woman) big 4th of July party. She was so sweet to invite me! I am totally thrilled since she is my blog idol and all. So I’m super excited to meet her again and also visit with old friends from my home town. I heard the fireworks are out of this world! We can’t shoot fireworks in the city, so sparklers are as crazy as we get! My poor, deprived city kids.

I looked on Ree’s blog to borrow the above ranch photo and found this!! Holy Cow!

She writes that this is only a small portion of their arsenal!! Should I be scared??

Hopefully Mom’s internet will be working and I can tell you if we made it out alive. Thank goodness for iPhones… they’re wonderful for small towns where your family doesn’t need the internet to survive. And also handy to have around to call the ambulance after someone catches on fire at the 4th of July party:-)

The best day ever!

I survived my 5 hour trip to the Oklahoma country this weekend!

I was saved when I found the charger to the DVD player right before we left! YIPPEE. What did our parent’s do without movies? I don’t think highway Bingo would last 5 minutes in my car:-)

Within the first few hours at Grandma’s, my son (yes the older one, NOT the 2 year old) stuck a Lego up his nose. Yep, and of course it got stuck!! WAY up there too!

Did I tell you he’s six years old and still hasn’t figure out how to blow his nose? He’s all about sniffing, not blowing. argh! I guess when you have something stuck that far up your nose, you figure out how to blow out pretty darn fast. Whew!!

One thing we just HAD to do was visit the swinging bridge!

This bridge has been in town since my mom was in grade school.

It’s old, it’s over a river and it swings… what more can I say? Oh… yeah, that I got my second heart attack after the Lego incident.

Later that afternoon we visited my Aunt and fished in her pond.

We sat around the fire and had a wiener roast. Do you call it that where you’re from? We do in Oklahoma.

They had new chickens which the kids had a blast feeding. We laughed because the next time we come visit, we’re sure to have deviled eggs, egg salad and lots and lots of scrambled eggs:-)

Then my aunt brought out her guitar and we sang funny songs. Well, she sang, while my mom and I threw wood on the fire! You’d think I’d remember more of the words to the songs, but I really did not get that musical gene or memory gene for that matter:-)

This one might be my little singer, since everything she touches turns into a microphone. It was so cute watching her listen to her aunt sing.

It was really sweet at the end of the night when I overheard my son say “This is the best day I ever had!” Guess it was worth 10 hours in the car:-)

Outerbanks Vacation

We’re back in Texas!

Our trip to the Outerbanks was wonderful. If you don’t know, the Outerbanks is a chain of islands on the coast of North Carolina. We stayed at the Hampton Inn in Corolla. This was the most northern town where there are very few commercial areas along the beach, mostly a secluded area with enormous beach houses. If you go a little further north, you need a four wheel drive to access the beach and homes. That is where the wild mustangs roam. It was a really great place for a family vacation! This trip was for our kids, I hope they will remember this when they are grown.

Here are just some of the things the kids did:

• Hung out with their cousins from Boston- Uncle Sal’s kids.

The Locurto boys had a great time together!

• Played on the beach

• Dolphin Watched

Most evenings there would be about 10-20 dolphins swim by our beach. Some had babies, we really enjoyed watching them!

• Chased Crabs- and cried about scary crabs:-)

• Climbed to the top of historic Currituck Beach Lighthouse

• Kayaked

(I stayed with the baby, so you won’t see photos. I can’t believe nobody had a camera!)

Apparently they did this for several hours through canals near the lighthouse area. Nobody cried, so that was good! I went shopping with baby sister. We ate outside and fed some very large turtles in a pond.

• Fished of a VERY long pier

This isn’t the same pier, but I’m sure it was similar to this. I didn’t go, it made me dizzy to stand out there very long. Yikes! We were in Kitty Hawk here. The houses are not as big, much more charming.

• Swam at the nice hotel pools. There was even a lazy river pool.

• Boogie Boarded

The hurricane in the Atlantic brought in some big waves. All the boys had to do on this day was hold on tight.

• Played Putt Putt Golf

• Posed for Family Photos

One thing they didn’t enjoy. ha! Our planned ahead beach photos got rained out 5 minutes before the photographer showed up! Oh well, the ones around the hotel turned out cute. I was just happy to get the entire family in a photo. It stopped raining right as the photographer was leaving so we did get a few in front of the hotel.

• Enjoyed evenings on the beach with the family

The parents enjoyed this time just as much as the kids! That is my fun sister-in-law Liisa. We were baffled at how Sal could just fall asleep with all the craziness that goes on with the kids. Pretty funny.

• Played sports on the beach

I highly recommend the Outerbanks. We really did it all! I need a vacation to recover from all the running around we did. I wish we had time to take a trip to see the wild horses. Maybe next time. We were very blessed to get to do all that we did, especially since the forecast was rain everyday. Hope you enjoyed the photos.
