Easy DIY Wall Art for Kids {craft}

DIY Wall Art

I found myself armed with an old canvas, lots of scrapbook paper and some mod podge so I decided to make some wall art for my daughter’s room. I wanted to do something whimsical and fun but my 5 year old can draw better than I can, so I had to find something online to help me. I discovered these templates at Martha Stewart’s website. There was one for an owl and one for an elephant.

We all know Amy loves owls, and you don’t know this, but I will tell you now that I love elephants. So it seemed the perfect project to do and share here today.

This could not be easier to do. The craft at Martha Stewart called for using art board. I had canvases so I used those instead. You can get canvases at goodwill usually because people paint on them, hate the painting and then give it away. It doesn’t matter if there is something ugly painted on the canvas. You are covering it all up and making it new again.

I started by putting scrapbook paper as my background. Had these been blank canvases, I wouldn’t have had to do that and they’d look a little less busy, but that’s okay.
Then I used the templates that I linked to above to cut out my owl and elephant parts. If you are smart, which I am not, your animals won’t be backwards when you do this. Mine were, but that’s okay. My elephant is facing the wrong way. You probably never would’ve known if I hadn’t told you.
When you have all your parts, start laying them out how you want them, then put mod podge on the back of each piece, then mod podge over the top of it so it’s secured to your canvas forever.
Now you just have to do a couple coats of mod podge over the whole thing and let it dry.

In less than an hour, you’ll have cute art to hang in your child’s room!

Zoo Trip

Yesterday I took the kids to the zoo. We had fun petting elephants…

Right after this photo, the elephant turned his butt towards us and did a gigantic pee and poo. It was his gift to us, he looked so proud and of course it was the most talked about event of the zoo when we got home! lol!

Nine years ago on this exact bench, my husband proposed. A few moments later that same elephant took a gigantic poo. Do you think he remembered me?

My husband is a big Rocky (the movie) fan. Didn’t you know that Rocky asked Adrian to marry him next to the elephants at the zoo? Diamonds and elephant poo… can’t get any more romantic than that?

It’s hard to believe that much time has passed and we now have these two lovely children to sit on the bench with us. It is kind of cool that each time I pass the bench, I am reminded of the moment my husband put his heart out there for me. Oh, and had my ring duct taped to his ankle! Don’t ask me why? I guess he thought I would never think to look there. ha!

It’s been a long time since I’ve been to the zoo with a 2 year old. One minute they are having a conversation with a snake, the next they have wandered into a field of flowers.

It was a very busy day. I think we’ll take it easy and stay home today so mommy can rest! If you’re home on spring break, I hope you are having some fun at the local sites. Our zoo was super crowded, but it was still worth the trip to have some fun memories with the kids while they’re so little. That bench hasn’t changed at all in 9 years, but man has my life!
