Laundry Room Organizing Ideas

Let’s talk organization ideas today. I have decided that JUNE is my month to get organized… starting with my laundry room!

Because I love to have parties, my laundry room ends up being the room that I store a LOT of things to give myself clean counter tops when guests come over.

I have often been told that I am the master of hiding junk and making it seem like I have a clean home. Believe me, it’s not that tidy, I just have the gift of “hiding junk”. Unfortunately, because of my knack for hiding junk, the poor laundry room has gotten over run with a huge mess.

My laundry room is smaller than my closet. No windows and until I had cabinets put in a few years ago, only a small amount of storage.

THIS is my dream laundry room full of cabinets, natural light and an amazing floor!

Unfortunately, I have a tiny, dark space and have to be creative with organizing.

Instead of having this lovely storage, counter top and TV above my washer and dryer as seen on Pinterest

I have this…

Laundry Room Organizing Ideas

I spent hours cleaning up my laundry room last week!

Today, I’ll show you my four favorite ideas for organizing and hiding junk in my laundry room! I’d love to hear your ideas as well.

Idea #1 – Have a Place for Board Games

I use my laundry room for this. The best money I ever spent was to have more shelves and a counter installed into my small laundry room.

The shelves go all the way to the ceiling and hold the family games and craft items.

Idea #2 – Attach Fabric Around a Counter or Table to Hide Junk

I attached fabric with a staple gun around my laundry room counter so I could hide my junk!

I have buckets of play dough, toys, art supplies, cat litter and beach bags ready to go to the pool hidden under the counter.

Don’t you love my new tablet? That’s my attempt at doing the Pinterest photo above with the TV in my laundry room! ha! I was watching one of my favorite shows, Arrested Development. It’s always good to laugh while cleaning messes. Makes the time pass by quicker for sure!

Idea #3 – Hang Items on the Wall

Hidden behind my laundry room door is this handy dandy wall organizer. It’s perfect for hanging brooms and mops off of the floor. You don’t need anything fancy! Before I had this cool organizer, I used nails.

Idea #4 – Get a Sock Basket

Seriously, how do socks go missing? To me, socks are the devil. I probably find at least 3 pairs of dirty socks around my house every day. And you can bet half of them go missing!

So after doing laundry and you can’t find matching socks, just toss the lonely sock into the basket and maybe you will find the match sock one of these days!

After cleaning out the laundry room this weekend, I think it’s time to toss out my sock basket. Summer is here and we won’t be wearing them anyway!

  1. Another idea – keep a change jar in your laundry room. When pockets aren't emptied before they hit the laundry, it goes there. It's interesting to see how much you can collect by the end of the year.

  2. LOVE the sock basket idea! I don’t know why I never thought of that before. I always leave the socks with no mate in the bottom of the laundry basket and it drives me crazy. Thank you for sharing your ideas. You did a great job of organizing and pulling all the clutter together into a neat area. 🙂

  3. Great idea! Did not think about that! I will do that! Getting the camera out now so I do not forget! Thanks for the suggestions! Look for pictures late next week! Hope fully will get a couple other rooms done too! Very busy this year and things got a little out of hand!!

  4. Would LOVE to have a laundry room! I live in an updated Summer Bungalow where all the previous owners added a little bit more room, but no laundry room. Our washer & dryer are in the kitchen… vac, carpet cleaner, mop and dusting things are in the small living room closet. I put a shelf above the rod and stacked up all our games there.

  5. My husband and my oldest son are getting ready to go to Boy Scout summer camp for 9 days! I plan on redoing my laundry room! I love the sock basket idea! My mom is going to come over to help me! I can't wait to get started!

  6. Nice post!! Closet is a best season to do cleaning of house then it gives the fresh look and you are also feel happy. Thanks for give these great ideas for cleaning of laundry in perfect way. Mostly I like the ideas of sock and broad games. I like pictures also. Thanks for making this post interesting.

  7. great ideas Amy!! I’m SO excited to have the laundry room on the main floor in our new house, but it’s VERY tiny – so I need to be VERY organized to utilize it the best I can!!

  8. Love it! My laundry room is absolutely minute and drives me crazy. It makes you get really creative.I also have mop, broom and dust pan hanging and I have a plastic organizer that hangs from the wall and houses the iron, a can of starch or in my case a bottle of Downy Wrinkle Release (love, love this product), and the ironing board. We've had it for years and have no idea where we got it but just love it. If we ever sell, it's coming with me! Oh, and my kitchen pantry is small, so my cabinets in the laundry room also house extra canned goods, etc. It's just nuts. 🙂

  9. One of my favorite ideas for board games is to store them on their side rather than stack them. That way when you need to pull one out you pull out one at a time. Much easier for everyone and with adjustable shelves doesn’t take up more room.

  10. I love all these tips Amy- they are awesome. Your laundry room is looking good! Wanna come do mine? 🙂 I think socks are of the devil as well. I’m horrible with laundry but my one tip is to have a jar/container for misc stuff found when cleaning out the pockets- change, money, toys, etc.

  11. I have a small trash bag that I use for gathering all the fabric softener sheets that gather everywhere. I then grab the bag and throw it in the trash when its full.

  12. When my children were growing up each child had their favorite broad game in thier room. The calendar had rotating days to play the games to include parents…when it was the persons turn to play the game they took it out and were responsiable to put it back. This solved the problem of storage and taught responsibility at the same time. As far as socks go I had a bungie cord hanging up with clothes pins on it and mismatched socks pinned on it. You only need two eyehooks,a bungie cord or piece of cord and clothes pins, it’s cheap to do and cute hanging up. Plus it was great to find the other sock! And it was eye level so even the kids could match a sock if they needed to. Since they also had to put away thier own clothes the laundryroom as small as it was became a family chore place. I washed, dried and folded they put away or hung up as the case was…I also had one closet for all the things that didn’t have a home. Which I found that if I kept after every month a lot of it got donated. The kids put toys, books and things they didn’t want in a basket which also got donated. Especially around xmas…it was a favorite thing to do…clean out thier rooms to donate to other children and make room for new things! Board games they outgrew got donated.

  13. I found a neat idea for lost socks on Pinterest also! It was a painted wood plaque about 8″ x 24″ with mounted squeeze clips for “Lost Socks”! It was really cute!

  14. I’m not that great with organizing, but I too am a rockstar at hiding junk. 😉 One little tip I have since I HATE spare socks as well. I put them back into the laundry hamper. Usually the pairs end up there together and once in a while I toss them. I figure socks are not expensive enough to fight with. 🙂

  15. I keep all our board games in ours as well it works great! Before that I had a cabinet with party supplies for the next birthday party, Christmas gifts when the kids were small, and cleaning supplies.
