Time to step back into the 1980’s!

Today is Friday and my day to post something fun and personal. I was hoping after visiting my family in Oklahoma for a week, I would have some funny stories to tell. But, we just got caught in a spring time blizzard… nothing fun about that!

I did venture up in my mom’s attic and to my surprise found a bag with my high school bulletin board, still intact! Apparently I couldn’t fathom throwing away my corsages. The bag was full of nasty dried out flower dust. {cough!}

I graduated in 1989, so this thing is chalked full of great 80’s memories!! LOL! You have to appreciate my 4 inch high bangs. What’s even funnier is it wasn’t just me … everyone had them! Well, only my friend Lori had good hair. Which she still does to this day:-)

Either there weren’t that many great concerts in Tulsa back then, or I just didn’t have the best taste in music?? I do remember that Cyndi Lauper concert, it was soooo much fun! I think The Bangles (They sang… Walk like an Egyptian) opened up for her. Hard to believe it was only $10. As for Poison, yes… I loved Brett Michaels. There I said it for the world to know. Please don’t think bad of me.

Here is my Rick Springfield ticket stub. The first concert my mom took me to. Ahhhh memories! If you were an 80’s child… you know you loved him too:-)

And who didn’t LOVE Top Gun?

And Dirty Dancing???? Nobody puts Baby in a corner!

Do you remember Sixteen Candles? I think it’s obvious that it was my favorite movie. Half of the bulletin board is full of notes with drawings of Long Duk Dong. I think my friend Sharon drew this. I had several talented artist friends and we would write notes in class which always included drawings of Long Duk Dong! ha! Our poor teachers.

I also noticed everything by my name said “wacky” or “goofy”. I wonder why? hee.

Here’s something you might not know about me… I was run over by a girl named Lisa driving a giant station wagon one night. You remember the kind with the wooden panels? I got out of the car before she had stopped all the way and she ran over my foot. The tire held me under the car as I screamed to the load of girls in the back seat “Tell her to BACK UP!” She then put it in drive and ran right over me. (re-enacted in this note…)

Surprisingly the only thing wrong with my foot was a big tire print on my white Keds. The doctor said if she had backed up, my ankle and foot would have been crushed. Whew! Good thing Lisa didn’t listen to me!!

  • Did you grow up in the 80’s?

  • What were your favorite movies and concerts?

  • Have you ever had your foot ran over?

Hope you enjoyed my 80’s bulletin board. Have a great weekend!

Love- Goofy

  2. thanks for the time machine. this was great! how wonderful that you still have those silly little memories 20 years later. i’m a bit jealous as think i threw most of my old memories away upon moving out to go to college.

  3. I wonder too, if they still sell those spirit ribbons to pin on your shirts for game days & homecomings? We lived in a good time, even if you all did have big hair! Heehee!

  4. @Mommy of Three!,

I was wondering when you’d notice this! 🙂 Hope you’re feeling better and get off those crutches soon.

    -Amy

  5. Ah – ha! I now have it in writing…..even in the 80’s SHE(that would be me!) had GOOD HAIR! Yeah Baby!!! 🙂

Thanks for the walk down memory lane to PHS & now that I am famous with my mug on your blog about 3 times, I better be keeping my hair ‘just so’!! 🙂

    Be good, enjoyed reading this!

    Love ya – Lori

  6. You were totally rockin those 80’s bangs and yes I had them too…it must be an Oklahoma thing because all of my friends had them, it was the cool thing to do. How did we get into cars, walk in the wind and not fly away, etc. I look back and laugh at my super high bangs!

  7. @Angie from The Arthur Clan,

LOL! Thought you knew everything about me right? Betcha didn’t know that about my foot. It’s even funnier with that drawing!

  8. OMG! I totally had the exact same hair! I can still remember a photo spread of Brook Shields with long wavy hair! Of course mine was more like a long blonde afro! I still have a box somewhere filled with corsages too! I remember going to see REM, The Fixx, and of course I’ll always remember when I missed out on tickets to see U2 play at a University in town. Biggest regret of my life! And the prom dresses were the best! My senior prom I wore a Jessica McClintock(sp?) red strapless with like a frill on the edge??!! Way better than the florescent slinky things they wear now!! Think Pretty in Pink! hey thanks for the journey down memory lane!!

  9. i think your 80’s board is ab fab! i was born in 81… but am familiar with everything (except the running over the foot thing) and more from the 80’s because i watched my older sis as a teenager then. i watched all those movies with her (which i now own all of them on dvd, hahahaha). i watched her dress and tease the crap out of her hair. she totally rocked the wave! it was great, i loved it. it’s my fav era… even though i was just a little girl 🙂

  10. That is so cute!! I loved reading this. I graduated high school in the 90’s but I do remember the mid to late 80’s very well. I have “Jessie’s Girl” in my head now. I actually kept a folder of stuff from Jr. High and High school, and it’s fun to look back. 🙂

  11. An 80’s inspiration board…what a great way to take a trip down memory lane. It’s hard to believe all of the things we loved as children are resurfacing. Have you seen the new Strawberry Shortcake? She’s gone from a plump little frizzy haired doll to quite the little tart!
One thing I wished we actually could bring back? Those concert ticket prices…$10.50, $16? Holy cow. That will barely cover parking at the U2 concert in two months.
Hmm U2? I guess somethings really never do change…

  12. I am dying laughing here! I was more of a late 80s/early 90s girl. Equally embarrassing. So you were too cool for NKOTB? (I think I had those very same teddy bear stickers up there… along with my puffy heart earrings.)

  13. Love that bulliten board. I loved and still love Bon Jovi, also loved Def Leppard, Sixteen Candles, Young Guns, Breakfast Club, etc. Graduated in ’89 as well, good times….

  14. Well, I was an 80s baby. Born in ’82. We had the station wagon with the panelling. I had to ride in the very back, backward and it made me feel so sick every time 🙂 My parents live where parts of Dirty Dancing was filmed (Lake Lure, NC) and I’m just up the road in the next town. They tore down the building where the last dance with the memorable lift scene took place and I have a jewelry box made out of the wood from the floor.

PS – What’s the Coors Light note about? Hmmm? 🙂

  15. @teresa,

I bet your kids could relate to this. My mom took me to many of those concerts. I think she had a car full of us at the Cyndi Lauper one:-)

  16. @the BLAH BLAH BLAHger,

Bwwwhaaah! The Donger!! I forgot about his nick name for himself:-) I need to rent that movie soon. Too funny!

Thanks for saying I still look young. I sure wish I felt 17 again!

  17. This is the GREATEST thing ever…I love that you have a sketch of the Donger on the bulletin board. You had great taste in music, too!!!

And I hate you a little because you look EXACTLY the same now as you did in HS.

    I’m jealous!

  18. I love it! I graduated in 86 and totally relate. I loved Motley Crue and scorpions and bon jovi! I was bummed my hair would never get big…even with all the aqua net in the world!

I love the Eskimo Joes button…my husband had a shirt from there (he went to hs and some college in OK) It is amazing how many people know it even in California.

  19. So hilarious!! I loved all things 80’s back in the day and still do. I would get a kick out of rereading some of those notes composed in biology – so fun!!

  20. OMGoodness!
That 80’s bulletin board is FAB!!!!
I bet you spent hours combing that thing and thinking back to the good ole days!
I totally went to a Rick Springfield concert!
    And Cindi Lauper rocked!
And what about Air Supply…remember them!
Oh…and I was allll into country in the 80’s…Alabama!
I was in college…and we would get up on our dorm desk…with our hair brushes…in our nylon gowns and belt out the songs!!!
    Ha..haha!
    What a treasure!
    xxooxx

  21. This was too funny! I graduated high school in ’92 but my big sis graduated in ’89. As a little sis, I loved everything she loved including Opus, Sixteen Candles, and 4 inch bangs. What’s funny is that I noticed all the Tulsa stuff. We were Jenks kids and faithfully wore James Avery jewelry, button on lace collars, bomber jackets, etc. Were you by any chance a Jenks HS grad?

  22. Love the bulletin board…you obviously had too much fun!! 😉

This makes me want to go see what I can scrounge up at my parents’ house. My mom kept a bunch of our stuff too.

I was born in ’79 so I mostly remember the 90’s. And no, I’ve never had any part of my body run over, thank goodness, and hope I never do.

  23. Wow! I graduated in 1989 too and this gave me a good laugh. I was more of a Bon Jovi girl though. My family owned the station wagon with the wood paneling. So embarassing! We called it Noah’s ark. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.

  24. This is hilarious! I graduated from college in ’89. So I was the full on eighties’ girl – all of high school and college in the 80’s. I relate to everything on your bulleting board.

I loved St. Elmo’s Fire. I had many romantic fantasies about he boy du jour to that theme song. Loved the Brat Pack.

Those drawings on your bulletin board are very Napoleon Dynamite, by the way.

  25. @Amanda @ Serenity Now,

Just make me feel old why don’t ya!? ha. I loved the Smurfs too:-) My daughter is really into My Little Ponies now… I forgot it was an 80’s thing.

  26. @Jeri,

Glad to hear you survived the snow mobile run over. hee! I loved Fast Times at Ridgemont High too. I saw it on Showtime when my mom was out one night… I wasn’t supposed to be watching it:-) That and Porky’s. Shhhh!

  27. I love the board!! My year was ’86 and I had that similar collection of all things that were super important to my youth. I, too, loved Poison and saw most of the big hair bands back then. I still have friends that quote from Sixteen Candles ALL THE TIME! Fast Times at Ridgemont High seemed to be a huge deal to us, too. And, my girlfriend ran over me with her snowmobile, but the snow was so soft and fluffy that all it did was push me deeper in the snow. No injuries.

Now, I feel like calling all my high school BFFs! Have a good weekend!

  28. OMG I graduated in 89 too. Big Hair was a must. LOL Also, I had those same bear stickers, like millions of them. haha
Rick Springfield was a hottie then too. Loved him.
Also, was obsessed with Top Gun!

  29. I was born in 1975 so I grew up with “Neue Deutsche Welle” (f.e. Nenas 99 Luftballons) and very bad haircuts!

Music was a big deal back there. German singers Herbert Grönemeyer or Marius Müller-Westernhagen had several good songs far away from “Neue Deutsche Welle”, but I fell in love with Graig, the bassist of the English band “Bros”. Uah! Don’t want to think about that! I never went to a concert, because I was too young.

I liked listening to Europe, Bon Jovi, Alice Cooper and loved the A-ha video “Take on me”. I guess that’s why I’m a typical radio listener right know: I was always interested in different styles of music.

And yes: Dirty Dancing! My husband gave to me “The Gold Edition DVD” as a Christmas present two years ago. Isn’t that sweet?

  30. I grew up in the 80’s – graduated in 1985. We had the big hair with lots of hairspray and black eyeliner/blue eyeshadow. I went to a very conservative private school, but we did wear the fingerless gloves and the Members Only jackets with the upturned collars.

Some memories are better left in the box! 😉

  31. @Libby M.,

I loved Bon Jovi too! I’m surprised I didn’t have a photo of Jon on there?? I also liked Guns & Roses. ha!

  32. yep…I graduated in’90. I love 16 candles, and Pretty in Pink, Just one of the Guys, Girls Just want to have fun!

I so remember those bear stickers.

RICK SPRINGFIELD!!!!! OMG! I loved that.

Also I remember those “Gag me with a spoon” pins that you could just wear on your clothes.

My very first concert in the 80’s was Bobby Brown and Rob Base…

“I wanna rock right now, I’m Rob Base and I came to get down. I’m not internationally known but I’m known to rock the microphone because I get stupid, I mean outrageous. Stay away from me if you’re contagious, cuz I’m winner no not a loser…”

my Mom would have been horrified at Rob base ripping off his velcro sided pants to reveal his black and red speedo type underwear during the concert. Scandelous.

I loved me some depeche mode and Duran Duran!!!!!
I also remember rollerskating to GnR’s Patience! Love it!

    Good times. Good times.

  33. That bulletin board is awesome. What memories. It’s great that you never took it apart. I remember liking all those things you mentioned. I am a bonified Bon Jovi fan to this day, but I like their new music more than their old at this point.

  34. @PippaD @ A Mothers Ramblings,

The Lost Boys was and still is one of my favorite movies. It was the 80’s Twilight:-)

  35. I never got Dirty Dancing when I was growing up, it was only when I was older that I got it! I did however like The Lost Boys and I kept a few bits and pieces from when I was growing up, but yours is a great trip down memory lane!

Oh and I never got run over, but a little girl walking next to me had her foot run over by a truck she was like you and wasn’t that badly hurt but your story and drawing made me remember!

My mom kept everything. I even have a box of my baby clothes:-) Some great 70’s outfits that my daughter has worn. Someday I’ll have to open an Etsy shop. I even found a few acid washed items… oh boy!

  37. Really fun looking at that private world of a teenager. Reminds me of my mirror that practically looked the same but with a 70’s flare! Have to say god bless your mother for hanging on to that for so long. The woman must be a saint! 🙂
