Cute Mermaid Birthday Party Ideas, Printables, Scrapbook Supplies by Amy Locurto

My baby girl wanted a Mermaid Birthday Party.

Here is what she got…. I hope you enjoy these fun ideas from my daughter’s Mermaid Party!

**Exciting Update!** My mermaid designs were turned into super cute party and scrapbook products! You can buy them here.

Party Designs

I had the best time drawing her as a mermaid for the invitation!

Her name was on the invite, I just put “girl” on here for the blog. I designed this invite especially for my daughter (this design is not for sale), but I do have a really cute version of it which is available in my shop. You can customize it with your own party details before printing too!

Mermaid Party Table & Food Ideas

I didn’t go crazy on the decorations as I wanted something simple and easy because I put all of my time into the food and crafts. The backdrop was sheer sparkly fabric and a few balloons. I wanted a feeling of being under the water.

I think these cupcake toppers took a lot longer to design than to make the sandy beach cupcakes! I now have the Mermaid designs for sale in my shop.

The food was sushi sandwiches, brownie bombs, brownie starfish pops, goldfish crackers, fruit, pizza and blue Gatorade.

Seahorse Cookies

I love these adorable cookies Bridget from Bake at 350 made of my seahorse designs! How cute are these? Get a free printable template and directions on how to make these cookies here.

Little Mermaids

The guests were three little girls, their siblings and one little boy (her boyfriend!).

I made these easy no sew mermaid tails for the girls. I didn’t realize how tall they all were compared to my girl! So some were way shorter than they should have been. You can see directions on how to make these at the bottom of this post. Of course, each mermaid got a crown too!

We had lots of fun and games!

Pin the crown on Ariel (which even the older brothers wanted to do), an under the sea treasure hunt and the older siblings had a blast in the dance contest! Oh my… there were some moves going on that should have been outlawed!! LOL! And of course opening presents at the end was a big highlight!

Taking photos as a mermaid was a hit, even with a few boys!!

I bought a large blue foam core board and spray glued a large cut-out of my mermaid drawing. I cropped in close so you couldn’t see their hands holding the board.

Mermaid Decor & Goodies

I found cute Ariel lunch boxes half-off at the Disney Store and filled them up for goodie bags. The boys all got Sponge Bob cups filled with pirate goodies.

Centerpieces were big cut-outs on silver chargers with pearls and shells surrounding them. I also had a table with a treasure chest and more food, but didn’t get photos.

DIY Ideas for a Mermaid Party

How to make a no sew mermaid tail.

Party Craft Idea- No Sew Mermaid Tail - Living Locurto

I am not a sewer, so I didn’t do any particular measuring. The best advice I can give on how to make these yourself is to measure your little mermaid’s waist then add some extra fabric for wrapping. Also measure from her waist to the floor for the length.

Sushi Sandwiches

Roll cheddar cheese, cucumbers, cream cheese and turkey up in a piece of white bread. I also added mustard to some.

love the sandwiches and the details…the mermaid face shots is awesome!!!!! love it!

  27. WOW, you are so creative. That is just adorable. I love it!!!

  28. This was adorable!!! My 3 year old wants an “Ariel Under the Sea” party for her bday in December, and she’s been talking about it for months. I’m not a huge fan of doing a Disney themed party, but I have a friend who did a huge ocean themed bday party, and she said I can borrow her decorations (it’s hard to decorate when your house is already set up for Christmas!)

Do you mind sharing how you did the treasure hunt? What a sweet party. :) I’m saving this one in my idea file. :)

    • Amanda,
For the treasure hunt, I just scattered fake coins, stickers, cheap necklaces, bracelets and candy rings (which I found in the wedding section at Walmart) around. I bought small colorful draw string bags at a local fabric store for about $1 for 8 bags. That kept the girls (and big boys) entertained for a while!

      • Vasiliki says:

@Amy, that was a great party you organized for your daughter! I’m planning a christening ceremony for my baby girl and want to have a mermaid theme. Could you please tell me how you made the topping for those cupcakes?

  29. What a great party theme Amy! I love it! Thanks for sharing! ;)

  30. Thanks! What great ideas and a great tutorial.

You are always so darn generous!

  3. […] For her 6th birthday, my daughter wanted a mermaid party because of her love of “Barbie in a Mermaid Tale”.  She made it clear she did not want an Ariel party, and I was unable to find any decor for the Barbie mermaid movie, so we decided to have a generic mermaid theme instead.  I figured it would leave a lot of room for me to get creative.  :-) I got most of my inspiration from Pinterest and Peaceable Kingdom’s Mermaid Island board game.  I envisioned a lot of aquamarine and coral colors.  I carefully chose fabrics to use as backdrops and to drape on tables.  I also made a lot of the decor myself. For the cupcakes, I cut cupcake wrappers out of cardstock and glued pearls on the wrappers.  I also made the cupcakes and icing from scratch because I wanted to use natural ingredients.  The light pink color of the icing came from strawberries.  I used the playing pieces from the Mermaid Island board game and copied them onto cardstock to make toppers for the cupcakes.  They turned out exactly as I’d envisioned.  I also made the birthday banner out of cardstock and carefully cut out sea creatures to decorate them.  It also turned out as I’d hoped.   In the living room, I draped different shades of blue crepe paper down the fireplace to look like water and I attached fish, seahorses, and seashells to it to look like an underwater scene. My mom told a mermaid story about treasure and then we proceeded outside to a treasure chest pinata to find our loot!  We also played “pin the crown on the mermaid”. One of the most special and time-consuming things I made was my daughter’s mermaid tail.  It took a lot of time and planning to get a basic pattern, but I had fun with it and my daughter felt really special. :-) We had a wonderful time and I think my daughter really enjoyed her party.
